Axies for sale in Axie Infinity marketplace

"If you play Axie Infinity, you could subsidise your income the fun way", he said.

Having jumped through hoops to get some ETH into my MetaMask wallet, I then set up a Ronin wallet and transferred WETH into that. (The whole process took at least two days; gah!) I logged into the Axie Infinity marketplace today in order to get started, only to get an unpleasant shock.

0.069 WETH for an Axie, on the low end of the price scale? Wow, that's pricey! Not only that, but I'm supposed to buy at least three of them in order to get started. That's almost one month's salary from back when I was employed. Sid Meyer's Civ V probably doesn't cost that much! Unless somebody sponsors me that much ETH (which I doubt anyone will and quite rightly so), there's just no way on this green Earth that I can afford to spend that much on in-game assets. I wouldn't even be willing to do so even if I could. It's at least three months' worth of rent!

There's also the fact that the game incorporates pay-to-win mechanics, which is just plain insidious, as anyone who boycotts EA for using/exploiting them can/will tell you. The deck is forever stacked against you if you don't have obscene amounts of money to throw away in pursuit of ... who knows what, exactly, if not making someone else rich? I like playing computer games, but not when they're such a blatant rug pull.

Well, I'm going to give up that idea as a bad one when it comes to viable ways to make/earn Crypto. It just seems like yet another vehicle for greedy people trying to get rich quick. Thanks for the suggestion, mate, but I it's not going to fly. I best get back to milking crypto faucets, Elixir's crypto games and investigating Splinterlands and Klei's new Griftlands game ...

PV Mihalache seems to have had a similar experience, except that somebody donated a team of axies to him. How fortunate for you, dude!

It's a very definite "no" from me.

Crypto is supposed to solve the problems of fiat, but I'm not convinced that it's actually doing that, as opposed to just creating a whole different set of them for anyone who isn't a multi-millionaire or billionaire with oodles of money to pump into it.

The content of this blog is exclusively to do with online privacy/security, cryptography and cryptocurrency: Understanding it, investing in it, mining it (in groups/crowds), developing/programming it, the social problems it aims to solve and the various ways to make more of it (or not, as various losses and failures happen). Let's get away from banksters, Capitalists and fiat, to an unbanked anarcho-syndicalist commune. || Banner image: Blogger's own.
