English Premier League Match Day 11 Review

By cryptogod-1 | CryptoGod-1 : Sports | 8 Nov 2021

Good day everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed the weekend and the matches, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things sports. Today we will be looking at the recent round of matches in the English Premier League, which included another defeat for Ole, Chelsea dropping points, and a result that lost Farke his job even though Norwich finally got a win on the board. If you would like to check out my post on the preview to this weekend's matches, you can find it here

Weekend Predictions & Final Results

So in terms of the predicted scores, a disaster as I got 0/10 correct this week. In terms of match-winner/loser, I managed to predict 5/10 correctly.

Predicted: Southampton 3-1 Aston Villa

Result: Southampton 1-0 Aston Villa

Armstrong

Another defeat for Dean Smiths' side with a poor first half their real downfall. After 3 minutes the game was settled, with a sweet shot from the edge of the box. Smith has since been relieved of his position at Villa Park, with the likes of Gerrard and Martinez supposedly on the manager shortlist. Generally, with the international break, this is a terrible time for managers to lose their position.

Predicted: Man Utd 1-3 Man City

Result: Man Utd 0-2 Man City

Bailly (OG), Silva

As Manchester Derbies go, this one was very poor from United's perspective. Ole still has the backing of the board, perhaps they are content just challenging for top-four, perhaps it's too expensive to sack him, or most likely they have no alternatives available to replace Ole at the wheel. It shows how low a point Spurs were at when Utd beat them last weekend, but the draw with Atalanta and loss to City proves this team is not at the highest level. A team looking devoid of ideas and unable to press, their counter-attacking game never took off as City dominated proceedings. The Utd players did not look comfortable in possession, and a squad with players like Pogba, Fernandes, and Ronaldo might as well not have turned up. With more top 6 rivals in opposition after the internationals, Ole really needs to find his winning formula or Utd could be out of the top 7, or even the top half of the table, by the beginning of December. Pep meanwhile has his winning formula and seems to hit the right notes when they are needed. Cancelo had the freedom to cause havoc and Foden was at his ever best. Pep and his team know there is a real fight for the title this season but are more than capable of the challenge.

Predicted: Brentford 2-0 Norwich

Result: Brentford 1-2 Norwich

Henry - Antonsen Normann, Pukki

Another match where we saw the manager getting sacked afterward, this time from the winning side. Norwich got their first win of the season but it wasn't enough to save Farke. With their next three fixtures seemingly ones where they can pick up more points, this team will need to channel their survival mode more often. It was a good performance and Norwich could have scored more. It was their first win in 20 Premier League matches, and will give them the confidence they can at least outperform the Derby record for lowest points. A real miracle might be on the cards depending on who the new manager might be. Brentford meanwhile will need to accept the fact they have lost four of their last six with Norwich, and sometimes promoted teams just know each other too well from previous encounters.

Predicted: Chelsea 2-0 Burnley

Result: Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

Havertz - Mydra

The result surprised me, but the fact Chelsea dominated proceedings and only got a point for their efforts will really hurt Tuchel's team. Chelsea had 25 shots on target but could only hit the net once, while 79% of possession is no good unless you make the most of it. Nick Pope showed once again why he is one of the better English goalkeepers around, and denied Chelsea numerous times. Dyche will be pleased to have gotten the point and following their recent victory, Burnely are only two points away from the safety positions. If they can maintain this form into Winter they should get enough points here and there to sit comfortably. Chelsea meanwhile will want to get back to winning ways soon and not focus on the chasing pack who will have seen this result as an opportunity.

Predicted: Crystal Palace 1-1 Wolves

Result: Crystal Palace 2-0 Wolves

Zaha, Gallagher

Patrick Viere has made this Crystal Palace team a real entertaining entity to enjoy. He has made his mark and the players have clear trust and belief in his vision. Now in the top half, and playing some expansive and attractive football, the fans will hope to push on from here and some will even dare to dream of European football next season. Zaha is built for this style, along with the evident talents of Gallagher and his engine in the middle of the park. Wolves will be disappointed but they were away from home, and most importantly they are still sitting in the top half and so far at least, away from any relegation battle.

Predicted: Brighton 3-1 Newcastle

Result: Brighton 1-1 Newcastle

Trossard - Hayden

This Newcastle team does have some underlying talent, as shown once they got the equalizer at Brighton. Maybe it was the new manager, Eddie Howe, in the stands which made the players want to impress. They might not be the all-attacking team ready to win the league, but there are players which can be built around to improve this team, instead of a total overhaul. Safety will be the first priority for Howe, and the club will then be in a position to really start building next summer. Brighton is flying so high it seems ludicrous they are above the likes of Leicester and Spurs, but Potter won't be worrying about that. He knows they are capable of greatness and if this Brighton team digs deep they could really push for a top 7 or 8 finish this year.

Predicted: Arsenal 3-1 Watford

Result: Arsenal 1-0 Watford

Smith-Rowe

Arteta seems to have found the winning formula, with his Arsenal side unbeaten in 10 across all competitions. Smith-Rowe has scored for his third league match in a row, and Arsenal has moved above Manchester United into 5th. It could have been so different, with Saka having a goal ruled out and Aubameyang missing a penalty. Unfortunately, Watford could not find a way into the game, and Arsenal broke the deadlock in the second half. Ranieri will have quite the task ahead of him, with the Hornets only 2 points above relegation and managing only one shot on target in the match.

Predicted: Everton 2-2 Tottenham

Result: Everton 0-0 Tottenham

Conte will be aware of the gigantic task on his hands to get Spurs firing again. No shots on target and needing VAR to overrule a penalty decision against Hugo Lloris, this very much demonstrated a team in need of improvements. They have the players, the stadium, and now a manager with winning all over his CV. Everton was coming into this game on a terrible run under Rafa, with three straight league defeats. He will be delighted to have stopped this slide for now and will hope Everton can kick on in the winter months. They pressed high and showed they meant business, but couldn't find that threat in the final third. Conte made use of his famed 4-3-3 and in time, with Reguilon making darting runs forward, should make for a very stylish side. Possession wasn't enough for them in this match and Conte was visibly displeased on the sidelines, but given time his side will start to tick the way he wants them to.

Predicted: Leeds 3-3 Leicester

Result: Leeds 1-1 Leicester

Raphina - Barnes

Both of these teams will be disappointed with their displays in the league so far. A delicious free-kick from Raphina was canceled out only 73 seconds later by Leicester through Harvey Barnes. Leeds showed their football abilities by dominating much of the game, but the Foxes thought they had won it late on until Lookman had his goal ruled out. Leicester are nowhere near where they were over the last few seasons and some will question how far Rodgers can take them. He praised his team's mentality but having missed out marginally on top-four over the last 2 seasons, that mentality is nowhere near what it was. Their next match, against Chelsea, will really demonstrate whether Leicester will spend the season closer to relegation or claiming a spot in Europe.

Predicted: West Ham 2-3 Liverpool

Result: West Ham 3-2 Liverpool

Allison (OG), Fornals, Zouma - Alexander-Arnold, Origi

Klopp and Liverpool in general will not be pleased with this result. It was an opportunity to close the gap on the leaders Chelsea to 1 point. Instead, West Ham have moved above them in the table. The Hammers ripped the Reds midfield apart, basically bypassing them on every opportunity. Liverpool were fortunate for a Van Djik last-ditch tackle on Bowen or the score could have been worse. Twice Liverpool conceded from corners, with the goalkeeper being an obvious target after his errors today. Perhaps Konate will be a solution for Liverpool in these situations, but the entire team needs to work together as a unit. The only positive was Origi getting his first league goal of the campaign. Wesh Ham meanwhile are flying in the League and Europe, ending Liverpool's 25 games unbeaten run. They will hope to continue this momentum and cement themselves in the top-four,

Table After Match Day 11

A look at the top half of the table, Chelsea and Liverpool dropping points mean 4 points in the difference of top and fourth, while Arsenals strong run of form has seen them move all the way up to 5th.

Top half

The bottom meanwhile sees Norwich draw level with Newcastle as the bottom two, with only 7 points separating 10th and 18th positions.

Bottom half

Top Goalscorers After Match Day 11

2 - J. Vardy - Leicester - 7 Goals
3 - M. Antonio - West Ham - 6 Goals
