Champions League Quarter Final - First Leg

By cryptogod-1 | CryptoGod-1 : Sports | 12 Apr 2023

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all well and have had an excellent week, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things sports. Today I will be doing a recap on the UEFA Champions League Quarter Final first leg results. With the second legs to be played a week later, the tension is mounting as all eight teams will feel they are in with a chance of winning the competition.

Quater Final First Leg

Tuesday 11th April 2023

Manchester City 3 - 0 Bayern Munich

Rodri, Silva, Haaland

A convincing win for Manchester City who all but booked their place in the Semi Finals. City were the dominant team from the off, with Grealish setting up Haaland for two early chances which the striker wasted. Bayern looked like they would take the lead when Musiala saw his goal bound effort blocked by Dias, before City went down the other end and Rodri scored a sensational long range effort on 27 minutes. Bayern struggled to find a response, as Sane three time failed to beat Ederson, before a huge error by Upamecano in the second half doubled City's lead. Grealish dispossessed the defender and flicked the ball into Haaland, who in turn crossed for Silva to score with a header on 70 minutes. Six minutes later and City got their third as Upamecano was once again involved, failed to pick up Haaland in the box who cushioned a Stones cross into the net. The result led to arguments between Mané and Sane, with reports of a bust up between them in the dressing room afterwards. As for City, Pep will be delighted his side got one over Tuchel and have one foot in the Semi Finals, with a professional performance needed in Munich next week to guarantee their progress.

Benfica 0 - 2 Inter Milan

Barella, Lukaku

Benfica controlled the pace of the game from the off and the home side should have done more in their home fixture. Benfica suffered their first loss in 13 Champions League games as in the 51st minute Barella scored with a header after a cross from Bastoni. From there Inter looked strong, looking to add gloss to the score and substitute Lukaku managed to do just that in the 82nd minute. A penalty was awarded after former Inter player Joao Mario was penalised for handball in the area. Inter had been winless in their last six games in all competitions prior to this game but the win boosts their hopes of reaching an all Italian Semi Final. Benfica will be disappointed with the result and their performance, and will know they need to do much better in the return leg at the San Siro next week.

AC Milan 1-0 Napoli

Bennacer

Serie A leaders Napoli will be disappointed with the result but know they are still in this one, having lost Anguissa to a red with just over 15 minutes left in the game. Napoli will also be without defender Kim for the second leg due to his booking, but will hope to have star striker Osimhen back in action. It was Napoli who started stronger, with an effort cleared off the line in the opening minute when Kvaratskhelia saw his effort blocked. Milan managed to settle into the game and although Napoli still looked stronger, on 40 minutes a counter attacked settle the game. Leao set up Bennacer for an unstoppable finish. Kjaer could have made it two in first half injury time when his header smashed off the bar. In the second half Elmas saw his header palmed over the bar by Maignan as Napoli looked to get level. As much as Napoli tried to get level, the red card for a late challenge on Hernandez left them happy not to concede more, and have a strong chance at home in the second leg of this delicately balanced tie.

Real Madrid 2-0 Chelsea

Benzema, Asensio

Madrid did their job at home with a professional result against ten men Chelsea. Chelsea were timid with Madrid in full control of the game, and on 21 minutes Benzema scored to give them the lead. The Chelsea defence were caught out and Vinicius stretched to poke on the end of Carvajal's ball over the top and Benzema scored his fifth goal in three games against Chelsea. The Blues struggled to get back into the game and with an hour played they were down to ten men. Chilwell got his marching orders as he pulled back Rodrygo when the Brazilian was through on goal. On 74 minutes Madrid saw their substitute Asensio score from a well worked corner. He fired a low shot from the edge of the area after being set up by Vinicius. Late on in injury time Chelsea thought they had pulled one back when Mount saw his diagonal effort blocked superbly by Rudiger, and Madrid held out to win the tie. With one foot in the Semi Finals, Madrid know they are in good shape to reach another Semi Final and push on to defend their crown. Chelsea meanwhile need to score at least twice, something they have only done four times in their last 22 games, and not concede in the return leg next week. Tough times ahead for Lampard and Boehly as they also struggle domestically and will likely be without European football next season.
