Round of 16 2nd Leg Week 2 Results

Tuesday 14th March 2023

FC Porto 0 (0) - (1) 0 Inter Milan - Inter Milan win 1-0 on aggregate

The goal from Lukaku four minutes from time in the first leg was enough to see the Italians through in this one. Porto huffed and puffed and even struck the woodwork twice within 30 seconds but failed to find the decisive goal to force extra time. Dzeko had gone the closest for Inter with a low effort that was saved. As much as they pressed to get a goal Porto ended up reduced to ten men as Pepe was sent off for a second yellow card in the seventh minute of second half injury time, effectively ending the contest. Inter join their city rivals AC Milan in the quarter finals, and have reached this stage for the first time since 2011.

Manchester City 7 (1) - (1) 0 RB Leipzig - Manchester City win 8-1 on aggregate

Haaland x5, Gündogan, De Bruyne

A goal fest from Haaland saw him break Manchester City's 94 year old record for most goals in a season, taking his tally up to 39 and its still only mid March. He also became only the third player to score five goal in a Champions League game after Luiz Adriano in October 2014 and Lionel Messi in March 2012. The first goal came after 22 minutes when Henrichs was penalised for a handball following a VAR check. Two minutes later Haaland got his second with a towering header from a De Bruyne cross. Haaland got his hattrick in the second minute of injury time as a Dias header rolled along the line and went in off the striker. Ederson had collided with Lamier and was somewhat fortunate not to get sent off, but the second half continued in the same manner as Gündogan scored on 49 minutes when Grealish set him up for a left footed finish. Werner had wasted a great chance to get one back but Leipzig offered little else, as on 53 minutes City got their fifth and Haaland got his fourth. Having seeing his initial header saved by Blaswich, the striker was on hand to apply the finish to the rebound. On 57 minutes he had his fifth in an amazing performance, after Blaswich had saved from Akanji but once again Haaland was ready to pounce. With the game coming to a close, De Bruyne got himself a goal as he curled the ball into the top corner in the second minute of second half injury time and the final kick of the game. Manchester City will be delighted with their performance, and while there will be tougher tests ahead in the Champions League, they might just begin to believe this can be their year.

Napoli 3 (2) - (0) 0 Eintracht Frankfurt - Napoli win 5-0 on aggregate

Osimhen x2, Zielinski

Another comfortable win for Napoli as they cruised to a win in Naples. As the top scorers in this seasons competition they have certainly been the surprise package, but it took until first half stoppage for them to score their first. Osimhen popped up with a header to open the scoring and doubled his sides lead on the night in the 53rd minute when he scored with a tap-in after a quick four-pass Napoli combination. It was the strikers 23rd goal in 28 matches in all competitions this season and makes him very hot property around Europe. In the 64th minute Napoli won a penalty as Zielinski drew a foul in the box and converted the resulting penalty. All in all it was a deserved win, and while there were no fan issues in the stadium, prior to the game there were clashes between Eintracht supporters and the locals along with a police car being set on fire. The Italian authorities had banned German fans from attending the game due to concerns for their safety, and this trouble once again highlights fan issues in the likes of Italy. Napoli fans won care however, as the Serie A league leaders march on in their amazing season which could see them go very far in this seasons competition. As for Eintracht Frankfurt, their Europa League win last season allowed them to appear on this stage and they gave a wonderful account of themselves in the competiton.

Real Madrid 1 (5) - (2) 0 Liverpool - Real Madrid win 6-2 on aggregate

In truth it was always a big ask for Liverpool to turn this tie around, but they went with a very attacking formation in starting Salah, Nunez, Jota and Gakpo. However they struggled to really create or click as Madrid controlled the game for large parts. Neither side could find that cutting edge, although Madrid did have the better chances, until the 78th minute. Benzema broke through although Van Dijk was there to block but the ball fell to Vinicius. The Brazilian completely mishit the ball but managed to poke it towards Benzema for the striker to tap home. Benzema seemed to injure himself in the move but scored the all important goal to see his side through. Klopp was quite animated throughout and did earn himself a yellow card, but his side didn't produce enough on the night and lacked the passion they have shown in previous years to overturn a deficit.

That's it, we now know the final eight teams in this seasons Champions League, with the draw for the Quarter Finals taking place on Friday.

Inter Milan, Manchester City, Napoli and Real Madrid will join Benfica, Chelsea, AC Milan, and Bayern Munich in the last eight.

With three teams from Italy, two from England, one from Spain, one from Germany and one from Portugal, it is clear that Italy is leading the way this season in terms of Champions League clubs with Napoli a dark horse for the trophy.
