I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things gaming and literature. Today I will be doing a quick overview on a selection of documentaries which I feel anyone involved in investing/finance or who aspires to gain their riches from this space must watch. They are in no particular order but very interesting for anyone who wants to gain a greater insight into the financial status of the world at large.
Freakonomics: The Movie (2010)
This documentary is based of a book of the same title by steven J. Dubner and Steven Levitt, and is less focused on finance and more based upon human behaviours. It explores a multitude of incentive based thinking through different case studies. It brings to light a variety of interesting investing theories about why people act and behave the way they do. It looks at what drives people which is very interesting from the financial perspective.
Enron - The Smartest guys in the Room (2005)
This documentary is about the company known as Enron Corporation and looks at its faulty and corrupt business practices. It focuses on how these practices led to the fall of the company, and is one of the most shocking examples of modern corporate corruption. It is associated with several illegal schemes, including instigating the California energy crisis as a way to drive up utility prices at the expense of the average American. It showcases how the Enron traders resorted to all sorts of underhanded dealings in order to make money no matter what the cost or who lost out, all with the aim of keeping their high-paying jobs.
Bitcoin: The End of Money As We Know It (2015)
This documentary is basically a crash course for anyone who is yet to fully understand what Bitcoin and Cryptocurrencies are, giving a concise and informative breakdown crash course about crypto and money. It focuses on breaking down the history and philosophy of money more than anything else while touching off the topic of crypto without delving into the depths of blockchain or FinTech.
The Big Short (2015)
This film is a biographical comedy drama which looks into a variety of groups which foresaw the financial crash of 2008 and bet against the market, making millions in the process. It observe the instability in the US housing market and predict its collapse, while by researching, they discover the ineptitude and major flaws along with the corruption in the system.
The Ascent of Money (2008)
This is a 2008 book by then-Harvard professor Niall Ferguson, which was adapted into a television documentary for Channel 4 and PBS. In 2009 the documentary won an International Emmy Award. The narrative of the documentary is to examine the long history of money, credit systems, banking, and how it spread through western civilizations. It also looks at the herd mentality when it comes to investing, while looking at the reversal since pre WWI of how money today pours into the western world instead of into developing countries.
Commanding Heights (2002)
Based off the book written by by Daniel Yergin and Joseph Stanislaw in 1998, this three part documentary looks at how the economics of different nations from around the world were developed, and how the free market rose through globalization. Going from pre WW1 through to modern day, it examines the free trade through to government regulation of the economy and the worry that globalization will not last.
The Last days of Lehman Brothers (2009)
This focuses on the world financial crash and retells the events of the weekend before the financial institution the Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy on Monday 15th September 2008. This is a drama and not a documentary but is based off of real life events and takes viewers into the dramatics of one of Wall Street's oldest investment firms and their issues after a turbulent six months in which their real estate investments had lost billions of dollars nin value.
Abacus: Small Enough to Jail (2016)
This focuses on the small family run bank known as Abacus, which was the only US Bank which faced criminal charges in the wake of the 2008 financial crises. It takes into account the trial and how the Sung family had to defend itself, and its bank's legacy in the community, over the course of a five-year legal battle.
Inside Job (2010)
Another based on the financial crisis from 2008, thia documentary looks at a detailed examination of the events which led to the unfortunate collapse which plunged the American economy into turmoil and left millions jobless and homeless. It identifies the key financial and political players while conducting a wide range of interviews. It traces the story from the United States to China and also to Iceland and several other global financial hot spots.
Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King (2022)
This is a documentary where a group of investors who investigate the untimely death of their exchange's founder, Gerry Cotten as well as the $250 million that they suspect he stole from them. Upon the death of the exchanges founder it is discovered he was the only one with access to the keys, meaning all the investors, from small to largescale, have no way of getting their crypto or cash from the exchange.
