The news was confirmed by a blog post a couple of days ago, but it was already in the air; from what we learn Riccardo Spagni, one of the most well-known developers in the community, will be replaced in his role by Snipa, historical developer of Monero, and will move on to take care of backups. Spagni has entirely dedicated the last five years to the development of Monero and will continue to remain active in the community, but it changes its role, as can be read in the post above, and from here on it will take care of the maintenance of the platform. As mentioned, the choice for Spagni's replacement has fallen on Snipa, in the same post with which the alternation is communicated, the reasons for this choice are also explained and, more specifically, we can read that:

Snipa is a longtime collaborator of Monero. It is best known for developing a popular pool software and supporting the network with well-connected nodes. He has considerable coding and auditing experience and wants to improve Monero's processes

We do not know, however, what the real reasons for the alternation are, if there was an internal rift that led Spagni to take a step back or if the developer simply asked to devote himself to something else, we know however that the current one is not an easy moment for monero and that Snipa will have a lot of work to do. XMR, in fact, has come under pressure in recent months, together with all anonymous encryptions, due to the crackdown on the anti-money laundering wanted by the FATF; especially in the Asian markets there are many exchanges that, not being able to conform to the new guidelines of the international financial action group, have decided to proceed with the delisting of anonymous crypts, with ZEC, ZEN and the same XMR which were the coins that more than all have undergone this kind of decision. The moment of difficulty of monero is also expressed by the graphs, with the quotations under constant bearish pressure and the price that by now follows a bearish trend for over a year; so much work will be needed to restore centrality to the project, so Snipa will have to roll up its sleeves immediately. We will see what the community has in mind to re-launch the XMR quotations, for now we can do nothing but wait for further news.
