Intro

Injective Protocol has carved a niche for itself as a Layer 1 (L1) blockchain, meticulously designed to cater to the burgeoning demands of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. Built on the robust foundation of the Cosmos SDK and leveraging a Tendermint-based proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, Injective stands out for its ability to guarantee instant transaction finality while maintaining a performance level that can only be described as lightning-fast. A key feature of Injective's architecture is its fully on-chain orderbook, which lays the groundwork for applications spanning spot, futures, and perpetual markets to build upon and tap into its liquidity.

In a departure from the traditional Continuous Double Auctions (CDA) model prevalent among centralized exchanges (CEXes), which is often criticized for its vulnerability to front-running and the resultant liquidity inefficiency, Injective has adopted the Frequent Batch Auctions (FBA) mechanism. FBA addresses these inefficiencies head-on with strategies including order auction intervals, uniform clearing prices, and sealed bids, significantly enhancing the liquidity landscape for all market participants. This innovation, coupled with the instant finality offered by the Tendermint PoS algorithm, firmly positions Injective as a high-performance DeFi platform.

Virtual Machines

Over the past year, Injective has witnessed remarkable ecosystem growth, with its native token, $INJ, seeing appreciable value appreciation. This period has also been marked by several technological breakthroughs and initiatives aimed at fostering ecosystem development. Noteworthy among these are the introductions of inSVM and inEVM, Injective’s solutions for SVM and EVM rollups. These innovations create a multi-VM development environment that allows developers from both the Solana and Ethereum ecosystems to deploy smart contracts on Injective with minimal modifications, thereby expanding Injective’s ecosystem capabilities and enhancing development compatibility across Cosmos, Solana, and Ethereum.

A strategic partnership with Ethena, a synthetic dollar provider on Ethereum, has further bolstered Injective's position within the DeFi space. Ethena's USDe, which uses LST and ETH as collateral and is balanced by a short ETH perpetual position, has experienced a meteoric rise in capital inflow since its public launch on February 19, with its supply quickly surpassing $1 billion. This surge in growth has catapulted Ethena into the limelight within the DeFi community, making the integration with Injective a strategic move poised to stimulate further vitality and growth within the Injective ecosystem.

Within the Injective ecosystem, Helix, Dojoswap, and Hydro Protocol emerge as the top three projects, commanding significant portions of Injective’s total value locked (TVL), according to DeFiLlama. Helix, Injective's premier DEX, specializes in spot and perpetual trading and has recently introduced Pre-launched Futures, a product gaining traction within the DeFi derivatives market. Despite positive shifts in Helix’s trading volume entering 2024, it faces stiff competition from DEXes like Osmosis and dYdX, which attract a larger user base due to their extensive range of trading pairs and deep liquidity.

Dojoswap, Injective’s native automated market maker (AMM) DEX launched in December 2023, quickly rose to prominence within the ecosystem, offering users a variety of yield opportunities through liquidity mining, airdrop opportunities, and launchpads. Its rapid ascent is also attributed to the introduction of the CW404 standard, developed in collaboration with Injective, which has significantly increased its appeal.

Hydro

As the sole liquid staking protocol in the Injective ecosystem, Hydro Protocol has quickly gained prominence, capturing a substantial share of TVL. This growth is partly driven by users staking their tokens in anticipation of future Hydro airdrops. Hydro Protocol aims to transcend the conventional boundaries of liquid staking by establishing itself as a cornerstone for yield and liquidity strategy infrastructure within Injective, with plans to introduce LSDFi products that amalgamate real-world assets with other DeFi yield sources.
