Things I wish I knew when first playing Illuvium Arena

Hi everyone,

As you know, I've been playing Illuvium and encourage you all to check it out. That said, if you jump into playing against other humans like I did, you're in for a tough time. To overcome some of the challenge, I've put together some tips to help you.

Ranked is hard but gives you a clue how to succeed:

The most important thing about playing against another player isn't their ranking, but the 28 weapons they'll be using against you. You get a preview of this and they'll see yours at the beginning of each match, giving you a few seconds to try to guess what their strategy might be.

Your ranger can bond with an Illuviual and it is game-changing:

It isn't clear right away, but you can click the little plus sign and bond your ranger to an Illuvial, earning its class and affinities in the process. This can be used to unlock affinity milestones, or new higher classes. Combine weapons and bonding to access the levelled-up version of each affinity.

Your ranger can become a hard carry:

With the right weapon, shield or armour, your ranger can become an absolute beast on the battlefield. Don't neglect him or her and leave them at the back of the battlefield, shooting their useless pistol - give them a sword or a cannon and some tanky armor for the win!

Affinities change in the late-game and are late-game game-changers:

It took me a while to understand that you having 5 earth or nature probably isn't as good as 3 bloom or verdant, and you'll need to figure out how these affinities work together as there are so many combinations. Check it out:

28 cards doesn't mean 28 Illuvials:

Whilst you need to have at least 5 Illuvials in your team, the board can field 8 and you'll want to swap out cheaper ones for more expensive ones as you progress through the battle, so you should probably be looking at 12 or 15 Illuvials in your team, at the least! But don't scrimp on the items, they're powerful.

Items are vital:

Items that buff max health or defenses, provide health regen and perhaps most importantly, provide energy for your Illuvials to access their abilities earlier can turn the tide of battle in your favour early on, so do use them when you have spare points, or even right at the beginning of the game! Have you tried it yet?
