20 years ago this month, June 1999, the first file-sharing, peer to peer Internet service called NAPSTER was launched.

There wasn't a Spotify, iHeartRadio, Pandora or even a way to listen to your favorite songs without going out and buying the CD...the way of sharing was to copy CD on to cassette or let a friend borrow it!

NAPSTER claimed it was merely offering a way for friends to share each other's music files, by 2000, 60 million people were using it. By 2006, Spotify launched, and by 2019 they boasted over 217 million active monthly users.

For the positive or negative, or likely somewhere in the middle, you can thank Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker for launching NAPSTER 20 years ago....the rest, as they say, is HISTORY!
