The third major upgrade, "Dencun," in the development phase of Ethereum 2.0 has been finalised. Following the Shapella upgrade, the Ethereum group has their eyes on Dencun.
ETHEREUM UPGRADE HISTORY
- The first Altair upgrade in 2016 transitioned Ethereum from PoW to PoS by merging the Mainnet and Beacon Chain.
- The second Shapella (Shanghai and Capella) upgrade in 2023 made it feasible to stake ETH and to unstake previously staked ETH.
- The third Dencun upgrade aims to improve storage and lower gas costs. by enhancing the execution layer and consensus layer.
DENCUN'S EIPs
Five Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) are included in Dancun, but EIP-4844, also known as "proto-dansharding," is the main one because it will scale the blockchain for Layer 2 rollup. Other EIPs include EIP-1153 for blockspace improvements, EIP-4788 for pool improvements, EIP-5656 for small EVM-related code modifications, and EIP-6780 for the removal of the anti-smart contract code.
DATE
Although the Dencun update has been confirmed, the launch date for the hard fork is yet to be determined. If the date is published, there may be claims of a delay similar to the previous upgrade. However, it is anticipated that the hard fork would debut by the end of 2023.
