Deutsche Bank is planning to launch crypto custody services within weeks, starting with Bitcoin and Ethereum.
The service will initially target institutional clients, such as companies, hedge funds and asset managers, giving them a bank-backed way to hold crypto.
The bank also plans to offer stablecoin transfers and tokenized deposits, and help companies issue digital securities. In 2027, it wants to expand into Asia, including Singapore and Hong Kong.
Honestly, I think this is a step forward for the German banking industry, which has fallen behind in many areas. It's good to see that Deutsche Bank is finally catching up with the crypto industry.
On the other hand, I wonder how this fits with Germany's broader approach to crypto regulation. There has been discussion about removing the tax-free one-year holding rule for crypto gains. If that happens, it could mean more pressure on ordinary investors while large financial institutions are building their own crypto services.
I think it will be interesting to see how these two developments play out. Germany wants to bring crypto further into the traditional financial system, but it also needs to be careful not to push individual investors away.
