TronHives: What is it about those bees?

By CrypticSteve | Cryptic Steve | 5 Oct 2019

Recently I came across a little Tron dApp that has blown my mind and I would like to share it with you. Perhaps for people who’ve been in the crypto space longer than I have this is no big deal, but I confess to being a relative newbie so everything I pass on my way down the rabbit hole is exciting and shiny.

It’s called TronHives, and I was playing it for a month before I even mentioned it to anyone else. Why? Because it’s ludicrous! Or at least, that’s what I thought…

Who could resist these guys?!

I won’t get too deep into the mechanics or strategies for earning – part of the fun is figuring all that out, but here’s the basic gist: You have some bees, they produce honey and wax. This in turn is used to buy more bees, which produce more honey and wax. Where it gets interesting, however, is that the honey can be taken out of the game as TRX – i.e., Real Money.

Interested now? Thought so…

To play, you need to have an invite link (here's mine - yes, I'll get a bonus if you use it) and a browser extension (TronLink or TronPay) or mobile app (TokenPocket or TronWallet). I use TronWallet because, frankly, it was the first one I came across and I’ve been quite happy with it. I’m sure the others are great too, but I have no first-hand experience.

The desktop version might give you a few more options, but I think I’m in deep enough. (Exhibit A: This blog post.)

Basically, you buy wax at 1TRX for 50 wax and you can withdraw 1TRX for 50 honey. I pumped in a massive €3 (roughly 300TRX at the time) or so, just to get up and running.

I do not make this much honey... Yet...

It starts slow and I didn’t give it much thought. The first round of bees cost 1500 wax/honey each, so with the 300 wax per day airdrop bee and a couple of bees giving me something like 6 wax and 4 honey an hour, I was hardly racking up the gainz.

And so it went on. For, like, a month. Small amounts that I put right back into the game, stacking bees, still feeling slightly silly.

Then one day I noticed something: my beehive was producing 1000+ honey per day. Quick bit of maths (1000 honey = 20TRX = 20c-ish) revealed that I could withdraw actual money each day. Not a lot, but enough that after a few days I’d get my €3 back.

Enter: The spreadsheet.

At this stage, I got full-on bee fever, creating a spreadsheet to work out the amount I’d make as the bees stacked up. Mind. Blown.

Did I go too far..?

Did I FOMO and throw in more TRX? You’re damn right I did!

Do I regret this decision? Not at all!

In retrospect, I probably should have put in more earlier, but… I didn’t. Should you put in more earlier? Up to you – this is just my experience.

DYOR and all that.

I also roped a couple of my equally obsessive cryptonerd friends into Bee Club and suddenly it was a thing. We keep bees now.

How long will this last? Dunno. You see, the whole thing with this game is that it runs until the smart contract runs out. The contract is topped up each time someone pays into the game and will keep going until it hits zero. Since I started watching it religiously, it’s bounced up and down a bit, but it's mostly stable around the 5.5 million TRX mark. Have a look yourself: TronHives Smart Contract

So much bees...

The number of players is increasing too. Oh, wait, did I mention that this is still only being played by a handful of people? At time of writing there are 4284 players (it was 4274 when I started posting this 20mins ago). That’s right – early, early days!

I wasn’t paying attention when I started, but it’s now increasing by over 100 new players a day, so it feels like there’s a bit of a snowball effect happening.

Is this a good time to get into the bee game?

Honestly, I don’t know, but I can see this thing growing for a while longer and continuing indefinitely. There were some people saying it had only a couple of months to run, but as more people join the lifespan of the game is extended.

I’m not going to tell you to sign up, but I will say I’m glad I did and I’m enjoying it immensely.

Like all the best clubs, you need to bee invited to this one, so if you fancy giving it a go, here is my referral link

Full disclosure: I will get a referral bonus if you use my link. If you don’t think I deserve it, there’s a whole selection of referrals available on the TronHives website, but come on – bee a mensch.
