Criptocurrencies in LATAM

The total rage for NFT games in the last two years had a very particular episode in Latin America and the Caribbean.

First, a clarification is valid: Many LATAM countries suffer from really desperate economic situations, in which a few dollars can make a significant difference from one month to the next. In cases like Venezuela and Argentina, where there is great currency volatility and a high rate of inflation, having fresh dollars for playing games for a couple of hours a day has become a miraculous panacea to improve the standard of living.

But the need is two-sided: while NFT games represented a huge opportunity, there also happened to be a massive market of gamers looking to make huge profits with little or no investment. And this broke the roadmap of any project.

I had the opportunity to be a part from the beginning in projects like PVU (Plants vs Undead) in which there were Latin Discord channels that notified the moment a plant returned the timer to 0 to be able to water it and get a few more coins. And it was absolutely crazy, thousands of people competing to get there earlier and get a higher income.

So, although in the pandemic we had huge NFT projects that were all the rage and that had great projections (such as the same PVU, Axie Infinity, MIR4 among many, many others) all the schemes ended up breaking when a youtuber or influencer from LATAM shared the information and people flocked to it.

In the same way, there were also huge scams that are not worth mentioning here, but that led many people to invest large amounts without any return.

By way of conclusion, I think it is really valid to understand the enormous level of need that exists in these countries, where some projects can really lift someone out of poverty or melt them permanently.
