Solana - Tried and tested, but resilient?

By Elpha | Coin and Tokens | 20 Mar 2024

Solana, also known as the Ethereum killer, seems to be living up to its name this year. More and more projects are building on chain, and it's attracting many people to its ecosystem. Memes such as "wen" and "wif" have been performing tremendously well. Jupiter, a DEX aggregator, has had a great airdrop season but has had massive trading volume, surpassing Uniswap, the biggest DEX in the world.

Its genesis block dating back to March 16, 2022, Solana has had its resilience tested throughout its cycles. Able to process up to 65,000 transactions per second, makes Sol one of the largest blockchains. The chain has experienced quite a few minor to major impacting outages, the last outage not being too long ago. Solana's price was greatly affected during the FTX collapse, bringing it down to around $16. The Solana Saga phone did not sell as much as anticipated by the team upon launch, only selling around 2500 units instead of the projected 25,000.

The Saga mobile phone became too hot due to the Bonk meme token, its price surging to 500x on eBay. Solana has also announced a Saga 2 mobile phone, which is expected to be released in 2025.

Many would think that the outages and the unfortunate reputation it would have had would deter interest in holding the token. However, the mobile phone ended up being worth more than its initial cost showing that the direct opposite happened. There is speculation that it might even flip ETH this year, perhaps reaching prices of $500. Memes on Solana and other projects have been driving up prices and adoption tremendously; projects such as Jupiter are hinting at more airdrops around January 2025.

Can this continue? Can Sol continue reigning resilient? Its low and quick transaction fees can be attractive. There is debate over whether the outages may prove that it's a bit more centralized. Whichever way one can look at it If Sol continues with no outages and continues onboarding users and projects, people may be way more likely to swap from ETH to SOL.
