By Buster Crabbe | Classic Film Reviews | 22 Jul 2020

Starring: Byron Foulger, Sidney Blackmer, Gerta Rozan

Director: William Beaudine (US)

Genre: Mystery, Comedy

Availability: YouTube

Watch Quality   A

The audio and video are both clear and easy to watch with just a few minor skips and jumps.

Plot Summary

A bumbling wigmaker finds himself both a victim and a suspect in a complex blackmail plot.  But as police dig deeper, they find more than meets the eye.

Star Power   C-

The actors are competent but not established stars.  They play the mystery and comedic elements skillfully, but each character is rather one-dimensional.

Chill Factor   C+

Your date will probably find this film amusing, but the oddball comedy is not exactly steamy.  There is a distinct lack of anything resembling romance.

Mental Health Check   B+

Despite the crimes, this film is relatively relaxing.  It certainly avoids the grit of the film-noir genre.  The silly characters keep the mood light.

Overall Grade   C+

The movie manages to present a mystery story that is unpredictable yet not at all thrilling, and a comedy schtick that is humorous without making you laugh out loud.  You will want to keep watching more out of curiosity than compelling direction.
