The Stablecoin That Lost 72% in One Day

By CineLonga | Digital Whispers | 24 Mar 2026

Today I read about a stablecoin called USR that suddenly lost most of its value and honestly it made me think about how fragile some parts of the crypto market still are.

Stablecoins are supposed to be the safe side of crypto.
People use them to wait, to avoid volatility or just to hold their money without worrying too much about price swings.
That’s why events like this are a bit different from a normal price crash.

From what I understand, an attacker found a vulnerability in the system and managed to mint a large amount of USR without proper backing.
After that, a large amount of funds was withdrawn from the system and once people realized what was happening, the trust was gone almost instantly.
And when trust disappears in crypto, the price usually follows very quickly.

The price of USR dropped from around $1 to about $0.27 in a very short time.
For a normal cryptocurrency that would be a bad day.
For a stablecoin, that’s a disaster!

The real problem is not just the price drop.
The real problem is the confidence.
Stablecoins work because people believe they can always redeem them for $1.
But if the system doesn’t have enough backing, that belief can disappear very fast!

I think this is an important reminder that in crypto, risk doesn’t only come from volatility.
Sometimes the real risk comes from the system itself, from smart contracts, from vulnerabilities and from things most users never see.

Maybe nothing big will come out of this event.
Or maybe this is just another small warning sign.
In crypto, it’s sometimes hard to know the difference until later.

But one thing is clear:
Not all stablecoins are as stable as they sound!
