Up until recently there was a lot of talk about blockchain being used by corporations and governments, but actual deployment of these technologies has not really happened. It was the technology that everyone said was coming and going to change the world. However beside its usage in cryptocurrencies and NFTs blockchain has been super under utilized. COVID though appears to have sparked a pretty big change though!

It only recently came out that in the United Kingdom they were keeping track of the COVID vaccines with this method. What was a little disappointing in this is the company based out of Texas that is working with the National Health Service is owned by Alphabet (Google) and IBM. They actually have expanded the trial of using a distributed ledger from tracking vaccines and chemotherapy drugs to monitoring the fridges storing the vaccines themselves!

While I am super excited to see such an application of blockchain it is saddening that it honestly took a pandemic for business and governments to utilize a tool like this at hand. Its a downer the more you think about it because its taken hundreds of thousands dying and millions infected for the tech to be used. It is good though that it is being used and I am excited to see if it begins to be used more in the medical field. Honestly once something like the medical field uses it it will only be a matter of time before the rest of sectors follow suit!
