Brave Browser: The Rebound

By Cje95 | Chronic Illness and Crypto | 11 Dec 2020

Brave Browser has been the go-to Web3/crypto browser for a while now. Up until July Brave really did not face any significant hurdles as it grew in popularity and thus became more and more recognizable. Once July came around though Brave faced a series of hurdles and setbacks that dramatically affected how people viewed it.

The Backstory

Brave began as a browser that not only was Web3 compatible but also rewarded people who turned on the Brave targeted ads with Brave's own token called BAT. BAT stands for Basic Attention Token and initially one could easily generate $5-$10 a month by using the browser and just having the ads on. At the time you did not have to interact with the ads and they were just in the lower righthand corner of your computer screen. Brave also had an amazing referral program with people in the top their countries like the United States earning $7.50 per referral. This could be paid out either through USDC or in the equivalent in BAT.

Even as the pandemic hit and began to ravage the world Brave's team just kept plowing along and the rewards just kept flowing. In July though they had to announce their first cut to the amount of BAT you got per ad. At one point it was roughly half a BAT for some ads or ~$0.10 which of course was unsustainable but was really nice when it was going on. Quickly though they cut the rewards twice more and actually had to ad another zero to the rewards column because so as were only earning you 0.025 BAT. This was a dramatic fall from the half a BAT just months prior.

This did lead to quite an outcry from people on the community page but when you looked at the economics of it it made sense they were having to cut back due to not getting the ad revenue they used to and that they had a growing userbase especially with the change to working at home. What really really knocked them though was the rewards pending display. In September it had gotten so out of sync with what you were actually getting paid that they did a one time BAT payout in the middle of the month so that everyone could restart at zero. While I commended them for doing this people just looked at it as they were further inept.

When October came rolling around the most recent blow came to the community. The referrals program was ending in November. However, as someone that has used Brave for over a year, I knew that initially the referrals program was only supposed to occur till $1 million worth of BAT was distributed. The team in charge had instead decided to fuel growth with this and distributed $12 million worth of BAT since the launch in 2018. A lot of content creators were upset by this and I could argue both sides of the coin for this one. It was a super-easy way to make $7.50 but there was a growing fraud issue they had been combating.

The Rebound

Brave's team got smart when the pandemic hit and quickly cut the ads by a ton and prevented the team from bleeding out when companies were slashing their spending. They also changed the algorithm to improve targeted ads so that if you did not interact with an ad from a certain company that after a couple of times they would not show it to you for 14 days then it could be shown to you again. As someone who really enjoyed collecting his BAT, this took the $7-$10 a month I made and cut it at one point all the way down to $1 of BAT.

However, as the economy has recovered the ads have begun flowing again. The amount of BAT while not as high as it was in its heyday is becoming a decent amount again! The ads even had become ones that I actually was interested in and would sometimes click on to see what either the deal was, or the new company, etc.. They also have partnered with so many different companies that you get the ad hit when you open up a new tab. Sometimes the pictures even shown are pretty cool and I will take a second to look at them! They have really done a lot to upgrade the user experience including finally working on the iOS version of the app. Due to Apple being Apple it was not easy for them to award BAT and allow you to transfer it without Apple wanting a cut of it. Now it appears that with the help of a QR code in the future you will be able to transfer your BAT that way to yourself.

There is still work to be done and it's far from perfect but when you take a step back and look at how they have come these last few months you have to applaud them for doubling down to fix the issues. In January they will be announcing a new referral program which I am interested to see what they offer. I will be moving to a new city and a new job soon so I will have plenty of people to refer to this browser! Plus at the end of the day, this is a much more secure browser than Microsoft Edge, Chrome, and if you are a school computer...... Internet Explorer!

I hope you enjoyed this article and if you have any comments I would love to hear them below! I also have spots referrals left on Coinbase Earn for Compound (COMP), Band Protocol (BAND), and Stellar Lumens (XLM)! With the price being down on most of the coins today it is a great time to complete these quizzes and also the new one for File Coin they added yesterday! Below are my links thank you so much for reading!

Hope everyone is staying safe out there!
