Basel at night

Memories of a cold night in Basel

By Quick silver | Celebrating life | 13 May 2024

The cold bit into my cheeks, nipping at my nose and ears as I ventured onto the bridge that spanned the Rhine River in Basel, Switzerland. It was one of those bone-chilling nights that seemed to seep into your very core, yet there was a certain magic in the air that made it all worthwhile.

As I stepped onto the bridge, the city lights shimmered like stars reflected on the water below. Each step echoed softly against the ancient stones, the sound mingling with the distant hum of the city. The chill wind tugged at my coat, but I couldn't help but pause to admire the view.

From the middle of the bridge, I could see both sides of Basel illuminated in a mesmerizing dance of light and shadow. On one side, the old town sprawled out in a maze of narrow streets and medieval buildings, their facades illuminated in a warm glow. On the other side, the modern cityscape rose tall and proud, a testament to Basel's vibrant present.

But it wasn't just the sights that made that cold night memorable; it was the feeling of being alive in that moment, surrounded by history and beauty. With each breath of crisp air, I felt more connected to the world around me, more aware of the fleeting nature of time.

As I continued my stroll across the bridge, I couldn't shake the feeling of awe that washed over me. Basel seemed to hold a thousand stories in its embrace, each one waiting to be discovered by those willing to brave the cold.

Eventually, I reached the other side of the bridge, but the memories of that night lingered long after I returned to the warmth of my hotel room. It was a night filled with wonder and awe, a night that reminded me of the simple joy of being alive and exploring the world around me. And as I drifted off to sleep, I knew that Basel had left an indelible mark on my soul, one that would stay with me long after I left its icy embrace.
