J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of The Rings is always a delightful read!!

book, bookreview, LOTR, Tolkien, literature

This year, I again experienced the delight of reading my still favorite book, “The Lord Of The Rings”(LOTR), by literary genius J.R.R Tolkien. The book is pure magic, it’s simply a combination of so many lovely things. There is humour, fun, frolic, songs, maps, lores, legends, surprises, adventure, danger, philosophy, friendship, love, travel, nature and more.

There is also evil, fear, greed, wars, sadness, treachery all woven together bringing to us a classic masterpiece.

My big ‘Red Book’ is a treasure for me!! (it’s my kind of harmless precious)

Earlier when I read it 10 years ago, this big ‘Red Book’ was like my Bible, it was very precious, not like the one ring the book talks about but precious because I loved it for all the beautiful characters in there, whose company was just so jolly for me as I felt I was with them when I was reading the story.

As a reader I too laughed, cried on the way, I marveled on how the characters (alluding to the hobbits) can do serious, super brave things when they generally are merely jolly good creatures, who have a penchant to while away their time doing silly, amusing things all the time.

J.R.R Tolkien’s fascinating World of Middle Earth

J.R.R Tolkien, has created a more than life like world with the Middle Earth in the book that is complete with maps, places having a history with many characters having a nice back story behind them.

If characters are interesting in the story, so is the geography, how the author has vividly described the places the characters journey to in the book, starting from the sunshine pleasant, sweet cheerful Shire, to mountains, evil forests with malicious trees, to springs, rivers, abandoned tunnels in mountains, the restful heavenly Rivendell, towers and desolate places that were once beautiful.

We get to see good old Bilbo here again (wish I had an uncle like him in real life)

The dear old Hobbit Bilbo became like my uncle, always generous, full of wonderful mesmerizing stories of Elves and places and wow, his poems and songs of olden golden times. This dear old Hobbit is loved by everyone except the spoiled and ruined, wretched creature Gollum, who “hates the Bagginses” as he feels Bilbo Baggins stole his precious.

Bilbo is a unique personality, whose life, fortunes change when he went on an adventure long ago with the Dwarves. This story is detailed in the book ”the Hobbit” written by the same author of the LOTR. Bilbo’s old expedition won him varied friends from Elves, Dwarves, and Wizard Gandalf. He was a very interesting company to his other younger Hobbit relations and companions in the book, who grew up listening to Bilbo’s tales, songs that fascinated them.

The perilous journey to fulfil the quest of Frodo to save Middle Earth

Bilbo‘s old journey brought something (the one ring)which his heir Frodo was destined to conclude it’s story for which he had to go on a long, perilous journey.

In LOTR, we meet more main Hobbit characters other than uncle Bilbo and his nephew Frodo with gardener Sam Gamgee, Merry, Pippin . They accompany Frodo on his perilous journey to support Frodo who had a very important quest to complete as the quest’s success was the only hope for Middle Earth to be saved from being taken over by the evil and cruel dark lord Sauron whose power is growing in the land of Mordor.

Even though this journey had many dangers that will make one’s spine shiver, these Hobbits still manage to be hilarious, something I marvel at. J.R.R TOlkien, creates lots of funny movements in the book using these Hobbits, even when dreadful danger was lurking close up in the journey.
