Keep up with your steps, you might earn crypto.
If someone from the crypto community said that line - we would have written them off as 'pie in the sky', however, Microsoft has filed for a patent that literally wants to utilize human body activity as POW.
Patent reads "Human body activity associated with a task provided to a user may be used in a mining process of a cryptocurrency system. A server may provide a task to a device of a user which is communicatively coupled to the server. A sensor communicatively coupled to or comprised in the device of the user may sense body activity of the user. Body activity data may be generated based on the sensed body activity of the user. The cryptocurrency system communicatively coupled to the device of the user may verify if the body activity data satisfies one or more conditions set by the cryptocurrency system, and award cryptocurrency to the user whose body activity data is verified."
Our body activity is already tracked and recorded to great extent on most phones. Apple's health data shows how many steps and staircases you take each day. There are apps that monitor your heart rate and sleep patterns and more.
Microsoft now wants to utilize those activities as 'micro tasks' assigned by the system, so every time a user acknowledges and completes the tasks -they are interacting with the app and participating in the Proof of Work (POW) mining process.
With such a brand name joining the crypto space - it could give a stamp of great approval in bringing crypto to the masses. Who knows soon we might be able to pay for that coffee by walking off the calories during the week.
For now, we will have to wait and see how Microsoft brings this idea to life and when.
