One of the temptations when it comes to looking at blockchain games is the economy put into place by the developers. In Axie Infinity it is currently mainly about breeding your Axies. For those who are not familiar at all what breeding even means and never came across Cryptokitties I will explain the basics in a few sentences. And then you have a good foundation to decide if that is something you want to dive in.
What is breeding?
Making a long story short: Two Axies are required to start the breeding process. The result of breeding is a Axie that can be used for your own team or sold / traded on the marketplace.
Sounds easy, so keep the following rules in mind to avoid any pitfalls on your way to a new Axie:
1) Keep in mind that breeding costs SLP plus the Ethereum blockchain fee.
SLP is the in-game token of Axie Infinity and can be earned through playing or swapping at Uniswap or any other ERC-20 swap exchange. 50 Small Love Potions can be claimed as a daily bonus by completing the daily quests. On your way clearing all tasks, you might end up with additional SLPs as each win give you a few prizes as well. So, completing the daily quests will give an average of ~70 SLP.
My experience is that as a new player those SLPs don't come easy. In my opinion, grinding 10 adventure levels can be done the easiest clearing stage 1 over and over again. PvP can be a frustrating experience. Each loss will lower your ranking and I had to lose 10 fights in a row to find my initial ranking. I would suggest to come up with some other tasks but that is a different story :)
So how much SLP do you need to start breeding?
Have a look at the following graphic:
Each Axie can be used for breeding 7 times. To calculate your SLP fees you need to add up the costs of each Axie. Look at my example. Breeding can be started at the marketplace website from Axie Infinity. Simply click on one of your Axies after logging in through Metamask.
Breed count for this Axie is "1". So I keep in mind that I need 100 SLP to use him for breeding. Once you click the breed button you will need to pair him with the partner Axie.
After selecting the 2nd Axie. You will see the total costs. In this example, I would be able to start breeding by using 300 of my 506 SLPs.
What to do before start breeding?
2) Before you actually start breeding you should think about the outcome. The price of an Axie is defined by his attributes and his skills. First, I assumed the outcome is completely random but I was proofed wrong. I found a tool that allows you to see what the result of breeding might look like. Please find the link for this tool in the resources.
As you can see here, put the ID of each Axie in the tool and you will see the chances of each attribute. For those people who have a solid understanding of the game mechanics, it is helpful to think about what the best breeding partner might be.
The breeding process itself takes one week before your new Axie is available.
3) Finally, I recommend checking the stats on the sales explorer.
