Worlds apart - a look into card types

Greetings readers,

In my previous post I introduced you to this pre-Alpha game called Worlds Apart set in the Doctor Who universe. I am intrigued by the fact that BBC is standing behind this crypto trading card game so I went ahead and spent a few euros on two packs to see what the pack opening experience looks like and how is the card design. Below you can find some snips of the cards pulled from the packs. Without being able to play the game I cannot dive into whether or not they are strong, but I am quite happy with having pulled a Doctor card.

As you can see the cards vary in looks and types. So far, based on the official website there seem to be the following card types:

  • Companions: similar to creatures but these are more notable characters - such as Amy Pond, Rory Williams, River Song, the doctors etc
Thinking here of the planeswalkers in MTG.
  • Creatures: as the name says, these are the bread and butter of decks. Seems they will be able to both deal damage and block (maybe similar to MTG mechanics).
  • Flash: spells or actions that can be played on an opponent's turn. Again, same as MTG mechanic
  • Moments: seem to be powerful spells
  • Upgrades: equipment that you can apply on companions or creatures.
  • Objects: These seem to be enchantments that cannot attack or block but have useful lasting effects.
  • Phenomenons: Similar to objects but more powerful specific effects.
  • Planets: This is interesting as it seems to interact both with the game board and your deck.

My thoughts right now is that the game will revolve at start around highly aggressive decks made up of companions and creatures with a good mix of flashes and moments thrown into the mix that would aim to end the game quickly and more tempo control decks employing objects and phenomenons together with some upgrades to stabilize the board and control the game. Probably planets will be used in some deck archetypes for lolz and will otherwise be only for collectors.

As you've probably noticed already there are different frames available in the game. Will explore these in the next post so stay tuned.

Take care,

Alex
