P-Perfectionist --perfection
Well, I truly can say as a clinician and cancer patient this is a word I needed to throw out the window, stomp on it and realize in my humble opinion one of the most over rated words in the english language... FORGET ABOUT IT!
I could stop my blog right here, because it is an expectation that just is not reasonable, feasible or in all actuality not FAIR...
in its definition and concept IF you try to live by perfection.... you will be so very disappointed.
Some Examples in my life:
As a musician one learns in order to be GREAT that we need to play each excerpt in an audition perfect. The most perfect musician would win the job..... never missed a note... perfect intonation... perfect phrasing... perfect expression.... oh, it goes on. I was raised as a musician to think this way..... lots of pressure actually to get to that level where I would qualify to audition for a premier Service band in my early 20s.
What about the child -student trying to ace that ACT, GRE, MCAT... you get what I am saying... being a perfectionist truly is a burden and potentially set one up for disappointments.
Perfection... control... all words and actions that sound good, feel good or DO THEY!
In medicine a surgeon wants to be a perfectionist every time he or she grabs that scalpel ... you want that surgeon, don't you?? Think about that or do you want someone adaptable, able to change the course.... a thinker.... its all about the best result...and sometimes those results are not necessarily the "perfect" plan.
What about marriage or relationships.... now that's setting the bar high... nothing is perfect.
Today, as a cancer patient and clinician and wife ... Adapting and also Accepting what you can and can not control is the best anyone can do.
We sure are all learning this as we adapt our lives as a result of Covid... Nothing perfect about this pandemic...
I will propose to all of us.... Throw out of your vocabulary..... Perfectionist and perfection and for that matter- control ... You will be happier!
Until tomorrow!
Beat of health to us all!
