Some of my friends have started moving from a corporate job to either doing freelance work or to Startups. But there are some advantages that a Corporate job gives that cannot be replaced by a freelance job or even Startup the matter. I will share some of my experiences with all of these in this article. These are not my personal experiences but something that I gathered from some of my friends. Let's compare the advantages one by one.
I used to think that it was all about payment and job satisfaction. Whoever pays me well, I should be staying with them. Those were the ignorant early days of my career. Only after talking to some of my friends, I got the perspectives changed. I know pay is important but that is not going to be the only motivation right? There are other factors too to be considered. But let's start with the differences we have in pay.
Differences in Pay
It is said that Startup companies or freelance jobs can pay a lot of money compared to a corporate job. I don't fully agree. Even in a corporate position, there are differences in Pay. Sometimes a service-based company might pay more than a product-based company but in a product-based company the job security would be high and the work nature would be very good with a decent work-life balance. But in a service-based company, work-life balance can be difficult and at the same time the work will also keep flowing our way and when we are done with one work, we have to start doing the next work. Of course, the nature of the work people chooses also matters a lot.
Flexibility is the next advantage we get in freelance jobs or startup jobs. One of my friends quit his corporate job at Samsung and started his career inside a start-up company. The job had a lot of flexibility. He can choose when to work and when to take a break. The work was also more task-based where if he completes a particular task, he can relax and take time before he gets another task. This is the same case with Freelance work as well. If we are done with a task, we can decide when to pick up our next task. Also if we decide we don't want to work for a week, we can easily take a break.
Some companies also provide short-term and long-term leaves but they do pay people even if they are on leave but that's not the case with freelance work or startup jobs. Especially if we are working on a critical project, there is a high possibility that we have to be there if something goes wrong. Pay alone will not be a matter here. How much effort we put into the project also matters.
Apart from the salary we get, corporate companies also provide other benefits. One of the best benefits that I see is the health coverage that they provide. Health benefits not only cover us but also our family as well. If we are planning to quit our day job and do freelance work or work for a start-up company, we must also be sure that we have options to take care of the health benefits we get from the company. These health benefits and coverage are usually for the whole family and not for just one individual in the family or just only for myself.
Other additional benefits we have are the leaves and other allowances we get. If we don't go to work for a few days, it is not a big deal and we would still be getting our pay but if we don't do any project like for a month or so, there is no income for us during that month and freelance working can be a pain here where we have always to have some work in the pipeline and the payment is always happening.
Some people say that a 9 to 5 job in a corporate company is a lot better compared to doing freelance work. The main reason is that we can follow good eating habits and sleeping habits and also a good routine. Our body would also be set to that routine and the reason for getting diseases or health complications are also very minimal. But if we are working in a flexible timing, we would be doing everything in a flexible manner and there is a high chance that we might not focus on our health and spoil our health altogether.
