The rehabilitation work of the Santa Caterina market in Barcelona, carried out by EMBT Architects (Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue), in 2005, was based on the premise of complying with an established housing program for the elderly with commercial market activity, respecting part of the pre-existing structures.
La obra de rehabilitación del mercado de Santa Caterina de Barcelona, realizada por EMBT Arquitectes (Enric Miralles y Benedetta Tagliabue), en el año 2005, partía de la premisa de cumplir un programa establecido de vivienda para personas mayores con actividad comercial de mercado, respetando parte de las estructuras prexistentes.
Le Corbusier, one of the architects considered among the pioneers of modern architecture, considered the roof as the fifth façade of a building, and this was established in his manifesto of the 5 points of modern architecture written in 1927.
Le Corbusier, uno de los arquitectos considerados entre los pioneros de la arquitectura moderna, consideraba la cubierta, como la quinta fachada de un edificio, y así lo estableció en su manifiesto de los 5 puntos de la arquitectura moderna escrito en el año 1927.
The main characteristic of this intervention lies in its singular roof that functions as an integrating element of the different uses, as well as of the new architecture with the old one. This roof, despite not being passable as Le Corbusier demanded in his manifesto, becomes the fifth façade of Ciutat Vella, since its colorful ceramic mosaic, the work of the artist Toni Comella, breaks with the monotony of the traditional roofs of the city, becoming its main facade.
La principal característica de esta intervención, radica en su singular cubierta que funciona como elemento integrador de los diferentes usos, así como de la nueva arquitectura con la antigua. Esta cubierta, a pesar de no ser transitable como exigía Le Corbusier en su manifiesto, se convierte en la quinta fachada de Ciutat Vella, ya que su colorido mosaico de cerámica, obra del artista Toni Comella, rompe con la monotonía de las tradicionales cubiertas de la ciudad, convirtiéndose en su fachada principal.
