Responding to others to Build the Personal Brand

The Response - Building the Personal Brand

By NKvM | Authorship | 15 Sep 2023

We all struggle to make good content. Some of us lack for time, for skill, or for ideas. But there are ways to overcome these obstacles all at once.

You see, other people have done the heavy lifting.

I am not telling you to steal, plagiarize, or copy. Not at all. In fact, that defeats the purpose. No, what you want to do is respond. Find writers and content creators in your field, select something they have done, and go over it with a fine-tooth comb.

By responding to what someone else has written—whether through critique, agreement, or sharing your thoughts—you not only create valuable content but also have the opportunity to draw from an established audience. In this article, we'll explore how engaging responses can help you foster connections, showcase your expertise, and amplify your online presence.

1. Choose Your Targets Thoughtfully:

When selecting pieces to respond to, consider the relevance to your writing niche and the interests of your target audience. Look for articles, blog posts, or social media discussions that align with your expertise or ignite your passion. By focusing on topics that resonate with you, you'll naturally be able to provide more meaningful responses and attract like-minded readers.

In my case, I am an author, and write at a fairly advanced level. Hell, I even have a degree in it. So, I love picking out papers and articles on aspects of language. This ranges from the art of narrative, to the mechanics of communication. Even the meaning of meaning. For me, this establishes to readers my knowledge of such topics, and attracts an audience among like-minded individuals.

2. Be Constructive and Thoughtful:

When crafting your response, aim for constructive and thoughtful engagement. Whether you agree or disagree with the original piece, express your perspective in a respectful manner. Offer well-reasoned arguments, provide supporting evidence, and avoid personal attacks. Constructive criticism can be valuable, but always maintain a positive tone and focus on the ideas rather than attacking the person behind them.

In fact, if your interest is quantity over quality--I'm not judging--you can agree with everything the author says. There is no need to even add an original thought if you properly reiterate and encapsulate what the creator has written or produced. Repeat, agree, amplify. If that is not enough to hit your target on words, add what you plan to do with that information. How are you going to incorporate that new knowledge or perspective? Is it something to do, or something to avoid?

3. Add Value and Insight:

Take the opportunity to showcase your expertise and offer valuable insights through your response. Share your unique perspective, draw on your own experiences, and provide additional information or resources that complement the original piece. By offering something extra, you demonstrate your knowledge and establish yourself as a trusted voice in your field.

You're quite lucky, because this is a response. The author has said their part. Their turn is over. You can take your time, see where they are right or wrong, and write what you want. You will look quite clever if you spot a mistake or omission, and this is easy to do if you move the goalposts of discussion in your favor. That's not always the nicest thing to do, but that doesn't stop it from being done. I can't stop you, that's for sure.

4. Engage in Meaningful Dialogue:

Engaging responses often spark conversations, so be prepared to actively participate in the ensuing dialogue. Respond to comments on your response, address counterarguments, and show genuine interest in others' perspectives. By facilitating meaningful discussions, you cultivate a community around your personal brand and establish yourself as an approachable and knowledgeable figure.

This sort of content can be controversial, especially if you go after established creators with large, active audiences. Be prepared for strong opinions. You might feel like you made a mistake, at first, but realize that the added buzz is bringing eyeballs. A long back and forth with an angry malcontent is a big boost of activity, and likely to attract more legitimate interest if handled well.

5. Leverage Existing Audiences:

When responding to someone with an established audience, you have the opportunity to tap into their network and draw attention to your own work. Ensure your response is well-crafted and compelling, as it may encourage readers to explore your profile, website, or social media channels. Authenticity is key; focus on building connections rather than blatant self-promotion.

If you have ever seen a documentary about sharks, you might be aware of the lampreys which attach to them, living like scavengers. This can be you. Following along, being witty when possible, you can interact with an audience that matches your interests. Slowly, that audience can become your audience. It's not theft. It's sharing. And sharing is caring.

6. Share and Repurpose Your Responses:

Expand the reach of your engaging responses by repurposing them into standalone content. Consider transforming your responses into blog posts, articles, or social media updates. Adapt the content to fit different platforms and audiences while giving proper credit to the original piece and author. This approach not only provides fresh content for your personal brand but also showcases your analytical skills and ability to generate meaningful discussions.

I have said this elsewhere, but always have an eye out for what you can do with your content. Don't let it die. Make it longer, better. Gather up a collection and turn it into a book. Break it apart and make it bitesize lessons. It is the same with your discussion, or little snippets. Each of them is a step that leads to something bigger. Just think about it.

My Final Thoughts

So, that's the basics.

Responding to other writers' work is a powerful way to build your personal brand and establish yourself as a thought leader in your field. By thoughtfully selecting targets, providing constructive insights, engaging in meaningful dialogue, and leveraging existing audiences, you can foster connections, showcase your expertise, and expand your online presence with little cost. Remember, the key is to add value, cultivate a respectful environment, and authentically engage with others, or not. Someone else did that, and you just have to say yes or no. So, start exploring, responding, and let your unique voice shine through the power of your engaging responses.

Tell if you have ever responded, or respond to this. I'd be flattered.
