The Power of Humanizing Elements in Your Online Content

Hey, readers. Before we begin, I want you all to know I have a cat named Brutus, I'm a fan of board games, I like making funny references from movies, and I can tell you a lot about Seoul, South Korea. That doesn't really matter much, but it establishes me as a real person that you can come to know, and not a bot, or faceless writer with whom you have no connection.

And that's what I want to discuss.

Establishing a personal brand that resonates with your audience goes beyond showcasing your expertise. It is synonymous with who you are, or who you say you are. It is your online persona. Adding humanizing elements to your online content can create a connection that goes deeper than mere information sharing. By sharing personal anecdotes, inside jokes, and glimpses into your life, you can build a parasocial relationship with your readers, fostering a sense of community and strengthening their interest in your content. In this article, we explore the importance of humanizing your online presence and the benefits it brings to your personal brand.

Authenticity and Relatability:

Introducing humanizing elements into your online content allows you to showcase your authenticity and relatability whether genuine or not. For instance, I told you about my cat. I could share some pictures of him with you if you want. That makes me a person that loves animals, which is considered a positive by most people. But maybe I don't actually have a cat, and I lied. You don't really know. In this case, I was telling the truth, but the idea of owning a cat gave me another dimension as a content creator that set me apart from bland alternatives.

When readers get to know you beyond your professional persona, it creates a sense of familiarity and trust. Sharing personal stories, hobbies, or even the name of your beloved pet helps humanize your brand and enables readers to connect with you on a personal level.

This distinct identity you create helps differentiate your persona from others in your niche, and builds recognition, making it easier for readers to remember and engage with your content. You are that person with the cute cat. You are that person that goes on envy-inducing trips. You are that person with the great fashion sense. You are that person that always opens with Howdy Folkarinos.

Strengthening the Parasocial Relationship:

A parasocial relationship refers to the one-sided relationship that develops between content creators and their audience. By incorporating humanizing elements into your content, you bridge the gap between being a faceless entity and becoming someone your audience can relate to. This fosters a sense of connection and intimacy, making readers feel like they know you personally and strengthening their interest in your content.

I personally think it is horrible how far parasocial relationships have developed in modern times. Children spend their days watching YouTubers and give them hundreds of dollars in superchats. They think these creators are friends, when the truth is far different. But I am not in a place to change the system in which we find ourselves, and I can't stop others from profiting from it, either. If you want to succeed, it might be best to develop these connections, and make the most of them.

Building a Sense of Community:

Humanizing elements in your content play a vital role in building a sense of community among your audience. They are keywords that your community can repeat to strengthen your brand, strengthen their interest, and attract others. When readers feel a personal connection with you, they are more likely to engage with your content, leave comments, and participate in discussions. By fostering a community around your personal brand, you create an environment where readers can interact with you and fellow audience members, forging deeper connections and loyalty.

Again, like I have said, there is a proper and improper way to handle communities. If you genuinely want to support them, and give back to your readers, fans, users, then that is best. Make sure you spend time speaking with them, don't take them for granted, stick to schedules, and don't reduce your quality. But if you go the other way, just remember that many creators became too controversial and killed their own communities. You can take advantage to a degree, but still work to maintain your community so that it continues to grow. For every tree you harvest, plant two.

Emotional Connection and Empathy:

Sharing personal experiences and anecdotes evokes emotions and fosters empathy. When readers see you as a relatable individual with your own triumphs and challenges, they are more likely to empathize with your journey. This emotional connection enhances their investment in your content, making them more receptive to your ideas, advice, and recommendations.

Indeed, many individuals use this as a tactic to generate sympathy which they use to manipulate others for donations, sales, et cetera. Although it is true we all suffer problems and pains, it can be very coincidental when your favorite content creator needs a new computer and shakes his begging bowl. I am not suggesting anyone to lie like that, but only want you aware of what can be done, and is done frequently.

Instead, I recommend an honest approach. Explain your situation, your wants and desires. Keep them simple and grounded. Set a deadline, and track your progress. Are you making headway? Are you sticking with it? Oh, no, you suffered a setback. Write about. Show people. Let them decide what to do. They may not shower you with money, but they will follow to see your progress, and feel a strong connection when you reach your goal.

Balancing Personal and Professional:

While humanizing elements are essential for building your personal brand, it's important to strike a balance between personal and professional content. Ensure that the personal details you share align with your brand's values and are relevant to your audience's interests. By maintaining this balance, you can create a cohesive and authentic brand that resonates with your readers.

For me, I post to several different platforms. Each serves its own function, from tracking my personal writing, to supplying lessons on English writing and story mechanics. Some are very professional, while others are just me talking about my day. This keeps content compartmentalized, letting readers choose what they like, and ignore what is not interesting.

Engaging Storytelling:

Incorporating humanizing elements into your content provides an opportunity for engaging storytelling. Share anecdotes, experiences, or memorable moments that relate to your expertise or the topic at hand, but let it lead toward a larger conclusion. Use storytelling techniques to captivate your audience, draw them into your narrative, and leave a lasting impression.

You should always have a plan for the future. This depends on your content, but be clever about it. Maybe you are working toward a goal like publishing a book, getting a certificate, going on a trip. There is a long lead up to it, and you drop hints and references that your readers encounter as time progresses. There is room for being clever, interesting, dynamic, and it can show a lot of who you are, or how you want to be seen.

And you might ask why this is necessary? Well, think of all the drama and controversy that fills headlines, articles, news and TV. There is an entire genre of YouTuber dedicated to YouTube drama. People like to follow these interpersonal outrages more than difficult to master skills, geopolitics, or hard science. If you can figure a way to incorporate this into your persona, you are likely to draw interest.

I will add, there is a saying which is sadly true. There is no thing as bad press. Anyone talking about you is likely to be a net positive.

My Final Thoughts

Humanizing your online content is a powerful strategy for building a personal brand that connects with your audience on a deeper level. By sharing personal anecdotes, hobbies, inside jokes, and glimpses into your life, you create an identity that readers can recognize and appreciate. This fosters parasocial relationships, strengthens their interest in your content, and cultivates a sense of community. Embrace the power of humanizing elements to build an authentic and engaging personal brand that resonates with your audience and leaves a lasting impact.
