Sipadan - wyspa żółwi

Sipadan is an oceanic island in the Celebes Sea. It consists mainly of a coral reef that covers the top of an underwater volcano measuring 600 m. It is now covered with lush, virgin rainforest and has been a bird sanctuary since 1933.

This tiny coral island covers only 12 hectares, but has a long and turbulent history that dates back to 1800. She passed from one reign to another. It was under the authority of Spain, then handed over to the Sultan Sulu, later owned by the Americans, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and finally returned to Malaysia.

Ta maleńka wyspa koralowa ma powierzchnię zaledwie 12 hektarów, ale za to ma długą i burzliwą historię sięgającą 1800 roku. Przechodziła z jednego władania pod drugie. Była pod zwierzchnictwem Hiszpanii, następnie przekazana sułtanowi Sulu, później w posiadaniu byli Amerykanie, Holandia, Wielka Brytania, aż wreszcie wróciła do Malezji.

While diving in the beautiful waters of the Celebes sea, you can meet not only beautiful species of fish and corals. There are places that are less spectacular than colorful fish, but are definitely more exciting. Such places are, for example, shipwrecks, but cemeteries are even more impressive - in this case it is the place of eternal rest of sea turtles.

Podczas nurkowania w pięknych wodach morza Celebes można spotkać nie tylko przepiękne gatunki ryb, koralowców. Są miejsca które są mniej spektakularne niż kolorowe rybki, ale dostarczają zdecydowanie więcej emocji. Takimi miejscami są np. wraki statków, ale jeszcze większe wrażenie robią cmentarzyska - w tym wypadku jest to miejsce wiecznego spoczynku żółwi morskich.

The Turtle Cave is one of the main attractions of Sipadan Island thanks to its amazing geological formations and turtle skeletons. This place is located at a depth of about 18 m, where the entrance to the Turtle Cave is located. The cave initially descends through a bell-shaped tunnel leading to the lower chamber. This chamber is connected to a small cave system with the Turtle Tomb.

Jaskinia Żółwi jest jedną z głównych atrakcji wyspy Sipadan dzięki niesamowitym formacjom geologicznym i szkieletom żółwi. Miejsce to leży na głębokości około 18 m, gdzie znajduje się wejście do Jaskini żółwi. Jaskinia początkowo schodzi w dół tunelem o kształcie dzwonu prowadzącym do dolnej komory. Komora ta połączona jest z małym systemem jaskiń w którym znajduje się Grobowiec żółwi.

The reason is prosaic. This is not a place where turtles ritually die, such as elephants. This place is a trap from which the turtles cannot get out.

Powód jest prozaiczny. Nie jest to miejsce w którym żółwie rytualnie umierają, jak np. słonie. To miejsce to pułapka, z której żółwie nie potrafią się wydostać.

Sea turtles can sink into the ocean for several hundred meters and not swim up to 3 hours to catch their breath. They can also slow the heart rate down to a few beats per hour to reduce oxygen consumption. Unfortunately, despite these amazing conditions, individuals who have traveled to the area called Sipidan Cave often lose their orientation and, despite the oxygen supply, simply suffocate unable to find a way out of the cave.

Żółwie morskie potrafią zagłębić się w oceanie na kilkaset metrów i nie wypływać dla zaczerpnięcia oddechu do 3 godzin. Potrafią również zwolnić akcję serca do kilku uderzeń na godzinę aby zmniejszyć zużycie tlenu. Niestety pomimo tych niesamowitych warunków, osobniki które zapędziły się w rejon zwany Sipidan Cave, często tracą orientację i mimo zapasu tlenu po prostu się duszą nie potrafiąc znaleźć wyjścia z jaskini.

If this dose of experience is not enough for someone, because dead turtles will not hurt, then while diving around the island of Sipadan, you may come across sharks, which will make your heart beat much faster.

A Jeśli komuś taka dawka wrażeń nie wystarcza, bo w sumie martwe żółwie nie zrobią krzywdy, to nurkując wokół wyspy Sipadan może natknąć się na rekiny, które znacznie przyspieszą bicie serca.

There are also shoals of Barracudas, but although they are predators, they are not dangerous to humans. Nevertheless, the shoal headed towards me looked like one huge monster, and when you see such a phenomenon for the first time in your life, you feel like running away.

Można spotkać również ławice Barakud, ale te choć są drapieżnikami, nie są groźne dla ludzi. Mimo wszystko zmierzająca w moim kierunku ławica wyglądała jak jeden wielki potwór i gdy widzi się takie zjawisko po raz pierwszy w życiu, ma się ochotę na ucieczkę.
