According to press reports, the American company Nvidia has reached an agreement to acquire technology assets from GROCO, a company specializing in the design of artificial intelligence chips, in a deal valued at approximately $20 billion in all cash, making it the largest acquisition in Nvidia's history to date.
According to CNBC, citing informed sources, the deal includes the acquisition of assets related to artificial intelligence inference technologies developed by GROOC, which is worth nearly three times the company's recent market value of about $6.9 billion. GROOC had raised $750 million in funding last September.
Why is this deal the largest in Nvidia's history?
If finalized, this acquisition will surpass Nvidia's previous record, set in 2019 when it acquired the Israeli chip design company Mellanox for approximately $7 billion. It's worth noting that both Mellanox and GROC are chip design companies without manufacturing facilities.
Despite reports suggesting otherwise, GROC described the agreement differently, characterizing it as a "non-exclusive licensing agreement" for its inference technologies, without disclosing financial details or the nature of the assets involved.
Under the agreement, GROC founder Jonathan Ross, CEO Sunny Madra, and several other team members will join Nvidia, a move reflecting a transfer of technical expertise to the chip giant.
Nvidia's Vision and Expanded Capabilities:
In an internal email obtained by CNBC, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang indicated that the agreement will expand the company's technological capabilities. He added that the low-latency GROK processors will be integrated into Nvidia's "AI Factory" architecture, enhancing the platform's ability to handle real-time, large-scale AI inference loads.
This move comes at a time of fierce competition in the AI chip market, reflecting Nvidia's efforts to strengthen its technological leadership by acquiring advanced technologies that support the next generation of AI applications.
