Tallyho: Own Your Wallet

If, like me, you've been burned by Metamask one way or another, you have probably been on the hunt for an alternative browser-based wallet. And like me, you probably couldn't find a decent option out there. It looks like that's about to change now as Tallyho!, the first community-driven web3 wallet, is here.

TallyHo! is available as a browser-extension in Chrome, Firefox and Brave. It prides itself to be 100% open-sourced and although not gasless, the transaction fees are lower than its centralized counterparts that goes back to the community pool. Support is mainly through their discord channel which has 17k members as of this writing. They post community updates through their blog, and their Twitter page which boasts 14.2k followers.

I tried downloading TallyHo! in Brave without any fuss. It only has 6000+ downloads with an average rating of 4 out of 5 from 16 reviews compared to Metamask's 10M+ downloads, rated 3.25 out of 5 from 2653 reviews.

Sign-up is fairly straightforward. Not really sure why the logo is a dog though. I initially thought it was a play on Metamask's fox, you know as an evolution sort of. But I realized dogs actually evolved from wolves. But I guess dogs and foxes are related so you can make an argument that the two are related but not exactly the same. :)

I like that it doesn't pretend to be a complete product so don't expect a bugless experience.

It will be set as the default wallet although you can easily disable it during sign up (or through settings if you were unable to toggle it off).

You can choose to add an existing account through importing, ledger connection or read-only address, and obviously, a new wallet.

Like what I said earlier, you can choose not to set TallyHo! as your default wallet. And it looks like you can't change your wallet password for now so make sure you secure it somewhere safe.

Upon sign-up, you will see that only Ethereum network is available although Polygon support is on the way according to their roadmap. Actions are just limited to sending, receiving and swapping unlike in Metamask where you can also buy select tokens.

Settings are also limited to hiding assets below $2 and toggling the default wallet on/off.

Personally, I have not much reason to fully switch yet due to the limitations in functionality although I plan to follow their updates and start migrating as soon as it's more ready for general use.
