Exciting New Project: a 1964 Multitool Restoration

16 Jul 2020 5 minute read 0 comments Groonie

On ebay Kleinanzeigen, the German equivalent of Craigslist, I found a METABO „Multitool System“, a product which essentially claimed to be an entire workshop that can fit into a suitcase. They got amazingly close to that ideal back then, by producing...

My New Website and I'd Appreciate Opinions

14 Aug 2020 MoneyMan

14 August 2020
I'd call this slightly above average for a small company website. It's nothing fancy, but it doesn't need to be. Simple and clear is best for a company website in my opinion. It's definitely easy to navigate, which is great. All in all, I still think it is a pretty horrible site (as are most company sites). A few thoughts for possible improvements: - The company name is pretty blocky. I found it weird to read within a running sentence. Consider setting it apart, for example by using a different font or a highlight-color. - Your service and company name are about "Steam", but the picture you use as a landing page background is Smoke. Also the logo is a... flame, I think? It's a small inconsistency, but it's one of those little things that people notice without consciously realizing it. - The fact that "made with squarespace" is the *only* colored thing on this entire site communicates "this is something very important". Consider changing that. (Alternatively, consider using a highlight-color in other places as well. It should be sparingly, but can be put to excellent use to draw attention to important elements.) - Your logo is an image file with shit-tier resolution. It looks super pixelated on a large screen. - Nobody is going to read that wall of text. - The thick font probably looks good on mobile (which is great, mobile first and all) but should be less bold on large screens to improve readability. The font size can be large, but the font weight should be reduced. Suggestion: Shorten that text as much as possible. Break down the remaining text into single-word bullet points. Then find a suitable Icon (or other visual element) for each one. Use the same style for all the points. The rest of the text (in which you go further into detail explaining each point) can be made smaller, or hidden below a drop-down or behind an active element. This allows users to skim the whole thing in a second, find the information they are looking for, and then read what is of interest to them while ignoring the rest. Ask yourself what questions you are trying to answer and then answer them separately and as clearly as possible. Look at the website of squarespace itself, for example, or the homepages of other large service providers. Pay attention to how they break down the more complex information with pictures, bullet points, enumerated lists, "cards" or other elements. Also notice the flow of your own focus and attention while scrolling through that site. What are you skipping over, what are you reading? Why? In that same vein: The most prominently displayed information is the name of your company. Below it says "new standard of clean", which is incredibly vague. What is your selling point exactly, and why is it not the center of your website? Instead of writing "COMPANY NAME - the new standard of clean", try something like "COVID-PROOF DISINFECTION SERVICE - utilizing electrostatic and steam cleaning", which I think is more to the point of what you want to communicate. Well, enough rambling. It's a nice, well chosen theme. If you spend some time thinking more clearly about what exactly you want to communicate and clean up a few details, you'll have a really nice website.

Review: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Manga)

28 Dec 2019 AirI'am

28 December 2019
I found it boring as hell. Everybody has exactly one character trait and no other personality. You have the guy who is a coward. You have the protagonist who is kind and brave. You have the seven whatever-they-were-called and the flame-guy is quick-tempered, the snake-looking guy is devious and scheming, there's the i-don't-care character who is indifferent to everything, and so on. There's barely ever any character development, either. The sister is written to fill the gaps in the story. She is conveniently stored away most of the time, doesn't need food or water because she's a demon, but she doesn't need blood either because she's a *special* demon. She learns to control herself, but still doesn't get to ever take off her muzzle because that's just how the character was designed, and lazy writing means never considering what changes to stories or characters actually mean. I'll admit that it has great fight scenes, but as the "story" progresses they are getting more and more formulaic, too. Now every demon has a "gimmick" - a single special ability or weapon - and the protagonist needs to figure out how to beat it. Once he does, the fight is won. It gets old very quickly; the fight scenes are nice but don't make this anime worth watching.

Death with Dignity - Should Death Be an Option?

16 Dec 2019 TheCryptoCurator

16 December 2019
Nice to see someone write about something other than crypto on here. Death With Dignity should absolutely be an option. It's a kindness we extend to every bloody pet, but fail to extend to fellow humans - solely because it makes some people uncomfortable to think about it. I watched my father suffer a slow and agonizing end to lung cancer, and I too absolutely reserve the right to go out peacefully, on my own terms, and at a time of my own fucking choosing. My end is the most private matter there is, how some people can really dare to tell others how they'll just have to suffer till the end is beyond me.

"Obviously, we are talking about coins in the 0.05 to 0.00X range" ---> If you have 0.000005 BTC, and it goes up 500%, you turned your $200 into $1000. If instead you buy 25640 nano or whatever, and it goes up 500%, you also turned your $200 into $1000. In other words: The price of your coin doesn't matter. At all. If you have difficulties with this concept I suggest you wait with investing until you've done some serious reading up on the topic. Maybe start with the wiki article on "portfolio theory".
