This post reflect my opinion regarding Brave Web browser and it's importance for the Web and small fish Youtubers.
What's a small fish? a Youtuber like me who has less than 1000 subscribers and 4000 viewing hours on the last 12 months. Which means I receive no revenue from Youtube.
Before starting, here is a quick reminder of what Brave is:
- fast web browsing (3x to 6x faster than Chrome or Firefox): Brave made a comparison on its site. Well it's made by Brave, but while I'm using it even on an old computer it's fast, so I agree
- private and secure: you can check trackers, cookies or others that are trying to get your information. Take a time to check on some website and you'll be surprise on how many things had been blocked by Brave and who is trying to get your personal data
- rewarding the user (us): gain BAT (Basic Attention Token) using Brave reward program, you can get several BATs per month!
- rewarding the content creators (us again): send BAT to a website or Youtube channel for example
- receiving BAT: since anyone can be a verify content creator, you can also received BAT from: your websites, Twitter, Twitch, Vimeo, Reddit channels... and I think and hope this list will get longer with time. For example, I'm using Thingiverse where I put my 3D print models, it would be nice to receive tips on this site too
Here is two practical examples using Brave:
- while searching a bread recipe, a pop up will appear, suggesting you to go on publish0x to read some amazing articles. True story, I've seen it, and I'm here because of this kind of ad!
- I made a video on Youtube explaining how to use sunlight for a free house lighting project, someone can tip me to help me, this way I'll be able to buy more tools/equipments and do more video and so on...
Waiting to be a big fish on Youtube can be very long and Brave is clearly changing the game. Brave allows any Youtuber who is a verify content creators to receive BAT from their viewers/fans directly.
Becoming a certified Brave user is actually quite easy to do. You can follow these steps:
- Step 1/5: Brave download:
If you go to Brave site following a link, pay a close attention to the address bar, if you have brave.com/xxxYYY where xxx are letter and YYY numbers, it was a referral link. So I invite you to use my referral link: https://brave.com/diy212
A referral program? if you download and install Brave using my referral link, after 30 days of use, I'll get a reward from Brave because I'm your sponsor. The reward varies between $7.5 to $2 (paid in BAT), the amount depends on where the user is located.
How to get a referral link: once you are a verify contend creator on Brave, you can activate a link.
- Step 2/5: Brave installation:
Start the installation and follow the instruction. Active the Brave reward program to start collecting BAT.
- Step 3/5: Brave Reward configuration:
Click on the BAT logo (top right of your Brave Browser) will allow you to configure your reward program: choose the number of ads you want to see per hour and if you want to do manual or automatic tipping.
- Step 4/5: Wallet configuration:
The wallet will keep your BATs warm, it's important to understand the risk related to your wallet. I've chosen Uphold, easy to configure and in a partnership with Brave.
At this point you can earn BAT while browsing the web. A pop-up will appear, you don't need to click on it to get a fraction of BAT. So I'm clicking on what I think interested, like Publish0x ads. I will receive the collected BAT on my wallet every month on the 5th.
If you have enough BAT, you can tip any verified content creator!
- Step 5/5: Become a verify content creator on Brave:
Follow this link: https://publishers.basicattentiontoken.org/
Then sign up, complete the form and configure the double (or triple) authentication steps. Then go back on this link: https://publishers.basicattentiontoken.org/
Then enter the email you set previously, you will receive an email with a link, click on it, then authenticate yourself. Once you're logged in, you can link your Youtube account (or Website,Twitter, Twitch, Vimeo, Reddit channels) and this way become a Brave certify user. In my case it took a couple of hours to be certified. On this page you can also configure your account and get a referral link.
And now you are all set to :
- received BAT: while viewing Brave ads or from your readers/fan/friends/ family...
- send BAT: to websites you like to help them or to a Youtube channel which is verified by Brave
Notice that Brave will collect a percentage (5%) on each tips you made.
Brave allows you to act more often and easily with verified content creators you like and want to help.
For example, there is a website I think we all know: Wikipedia, and we all saw they need money from time to time (full time people employment, maintaining servers... have a cost).
You can check Wikipedia stats here. I found out they have around 1.5Billion of unique visitor per month (!!!! so many), so if a percentage of these unique visitor are using Brave, like 1%, it would be 15Millions unique Brave user visiting Wikipedia. And now looking at Wikipedia annual report (2018). We can see they have a liability of 10.9Millions dollars. So, if we imagine that all Brave users (because Brave users are all generous!) give 1BAT: 15M*0.95 = 14.25M BAT/month to Wikipedia which is equivalent to $3.27M/month (using 1BAT = $0.23 on March 3rd of 2020), and equal to $39.33M for a year!
So Brave can remove more than 3.6 times Wikipedia liability for 2018. And that just 1% of unique visitor using Brave and they all give 1 BAT per month (equivalent to $2.76 a year per Brave user).
On a -really- smaller scale, for a Youtuber like me, I have around 13k view per month, if 1% is using Brave and give me 1BAT, it's 130 tips and 130*0.95 = 123.5 BAT/month which would give me $28.4/month, which is $340.86/year that would clearly help me in my DIY project!!
This calculus supposed a 1% for Brave of the web browser world, which is not the case already, but I hope it will (and will be even higher).
So to conclude: use Brave, change the web!
