Where I Started
In the last few weeks I have travelled by train a lot. This has given me the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate the Temporary Boost feature for the coin app.
I have ran 5 independent experiments. Some of which I was driving and the tests had flaws because spotty cell service interupting the app and causing it to freeze and miss large patches of the trip, and wasting money in the process. For obvious reasons I was not able to monitor the app as diligently as I would like. My most recent train ride from Montreal to Toronto was as good of a test as I could get. You can see the results of that test here.
My baseline test has always been a train ride from Toronto to Montreal I took last December that the baseline for such a journey is around 500 COIN. This is without a paid account, but with an Sentinel NFC boost.

Temporary Boosts.
Early in 2023 the developers at COIN decided to add a feature that gave 4 hours of increased mining rate. A novel and intriguing idea. Spend $0.99 USDC to mine a bunch of COIN.
Over the last few months I have made 5 attempts at examining this Temporary Boost. I wanted to see if it was worth the price tag.
The results of the five Temporary Boost tests that I ran were:
- 1 - Loss
- 2 - Loss
- 3 - Loss
- 4 - Loss
- 5 - Win – but just barely.
Although the trend is in the right direction it just doesn’t feel like its worth the effort. I could just buy $0.99 USDC worth of XYO on the direct market and not have to nurse my phone for 4 hours.
A True Baseline
I have been comparing the boosted trips to the baseline above, but I don't think it is an effective comparison. The trip I tweeted about only used the Sentinel NFC Card. The Boost Experiments were using both the NFC and the Pro Account.
The real comparison is comparing trips using full boosts (NFC + Pro + Temp. Boost) to just the semi boost (NFC + Pro).
I had the opportunity to ride the same train twice on June 3rd 2023. This is obviously not long enough to make the 4 hour Temporary Boost worth it. However, I thought it could be a good opportunity for a true comparison. This is a stretch of track between Kingston and Toronto ON where I think the cell service would not be an impediment.
I ran two 1 hour tests.
The first one using the paid subscription rate and the Sentinel NFC card.
The second using the paid subscription alone - because I forgot to tap.
First Test Results
I started with 2,750.36 and ended with 3,214.60 COIN.
that's a 464.24 COIN in an slightly over an hour.
Results X 4 = 1856.96 projected COIN in a four hour period
1856.96 COIN = 232.67 XYO = $0.82 USDC.
Second Test Results
I started 3422.44 COIN and ended the trip with 3888.7.
The one hour trip back grossed 466.26 COIN
Results X 4 = 1865.04
1865.04 COIN = 233.65 = $0.83 USDC.
Both of these projected results came in lower than the best Temporary Boosted runs, but not by much. It is also important to note that they both didn't cost anything extra. This is pretty damning for the Temporary Boost. These non boosted tests, while projections, were not 3X less than the boost that promised 3X the mining speed.
My aim is to continue running these experiments, until I have a large enough sample size. My next 4 hour trip will be without the Temporary Boost so I a can see a true comparison. This should be coming in the next few weeks.
But I am now operating wholly in the camp that the Temporary Boost is not worth it.
