On February 15th, Square Enix, the legendary video-game company behind the Final Fantasy franchise, announced a partnership with Polygon to launch their upcoming NFT-based game, SYMBIOGENESIS.
Back on November 3rd of 2022, Square Enix officially announced SYMBIOGENESIS, via press release, which they stated to be their "first digital collectible art project designed from the ground up for Web3 fans".
Originally, SYMBIOGENESIS was set to be released directly on the Ethereum mainnet. However, this announcement confirms that Square Enix will now be launching the game on Polygon, which is a sidechain of Ethereum.
Naoyuki Tamate, Game Producer for SYMBIOGENESIS, specifically mentioned that they chose Polygon for their "high transaction speeds, low gas fees, and overall user-friendliness to deliver this unique experience to Web3 fans".

Here is a tweet from Polygon announcing the collaboration with Square Enix to launch their upcoming web3 game:
SYMBIOGENESIS will consist of 10,000 NFTs, and the story will be set on a "mysterious floating continent where unique storylines unravel based on information obtained by holding digital collectible art that represents different characters".
The gameplay will reportedly be turn-based narrative, where players will be able to unlock different story paths by holding/trading specific NFTs and by completing various missions without the world.
All players will be able to unlock multiple different endings to the story. However, only 3 lucky players will be chosen to participate in the final “World Mission", which will "decide the ending of the story, the fate of the world, and everyone in it".
Interestingly, SYMBIOGENESIS will be the newest entry in the dormant Parasite Eve franchise, which last saw a release on the PlayStation Portable in 2010.
SYMBIOGENESIS is currently set to launch during "Spring 2023".

In my personal opinion, I am excited to see this game when it launches, as I have always been a big fan of Square Enix video games, like Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and the last few Tomb Raider games.
There have been a lot of web3 games launched and I like to play a few of them, like Gods Unchained and Rising Star, but no triple-A gaming company has ever developed and launched their own game in the web3 space.
You can bet that I will be writing about this game when it launches and I will most likely be playing it.
