What the heck is ōLand?

Is the metaverse even a thing anymore? Are there more than 38 people interested? Does anyone care about rent-bearing NFTs?

Let's dive in.

Who or What is Overline?

ōLand (not to be confused with Öland) is a new metaverse concept that has over 800,000 users signed up. The "overline network" also includes the ōRouter and ōMap, and gets its name from the line above the "o" in those products' names.

I say "users signed up" and not "active users" because this project is still in its very early stages. Currently, the only ways to interact with the network are as follows:

  • Sign up with only your email address to receive a FREE ōLand NFT, then claim daily ōCash to buy ōTreats that can attract ōFriends to visit your ōLand for a chance at increasing its rarity or function.
  • Recruit referrals to receive additional plot of ōLand and 20% of everything they spend for life.
    • Not clear if this includes both ōCash and ōRouter purchases.
  • Pre-order an ōRouter.
  • Watch the animated globe spin on the ōMaps page.

Why should I care about an ōLand NFT?

Even if you don't have time for games and this project never goes anywhere, there's no KYC or buy-in involved in claiming these NFTs. They are supposed to represent actual locations on the physical planet, so in theory there are only so many of them. Even if you don't personally care about this project or game, someone in the future almost certainly will, and you can trade or sell your ōLand to them.

Plus, since they haven't all been "revealed" yet, there is a chance that yours could be some major destination (like the Louvre, or the Taj Mahal) and that every time someone in the real world visits your plot you'll receive "rent" in crypto. Unclear as of yet whether these visitors have to be ōLand members or be carrying an ōRouter, or how this works. The site states simply, "the more wireless activity that occurs on your plot, the more mining rewards it will get."

Plus, it's FREE. There's literally nothing to lose.

What's this about ōCash and ōTreats?

Starting today users can place ōTreats on their plots of ōLand to try to attract one of 10,000 ōFriends. In some cases, the ōFriend will leave you a lootbox, and in extremely lucky cases the ōFriend will "choose" to STAY on your ōLand, increasing your plot's value and yield significantly. This has been named as "50% of all the future royalty fees generated by people buying and selling ōLand."

The ōTreats have weirdo flavors like "watermelon goat."

ōTreats can be purchased for ōCash (the native currency of the platform, not the fiat), and both of these things are currently being given away as a reward for daily logins. You can also purchase ōCash.

What is an ōRouter?

Described as "the world's first web3 router," these "pocket-sized" devices are supposed to use "ambient RF" to connect to each other and users of the network. The specs describe it as using Bluetooth, LoRa, and "proof-of-distance," which sounds like the mechanism used by COVID exposure notification applications but isn't really described in detail.

Devices aren't available yet, so pre-order involves reserving a device for $100 USD, with additional payment due when the devices are ready to ship.

What is ōMaps?

There are zero details on this section of the site, which shows only a spinning globe and a countdown timer (currently set to almost 70 days). Based on their other offerings, this could be a way to navigate between plots of ōLand, or it could be a representation of the location of ōRouters. I suppose we'll find out in January.

Do they have anything else in the works?

Why, yes. The "apps" section of the page contains links to a browser-based and desktop application for cross-chain DEX. Clicking on them displays a message that the apps are currently in beta.

There are also links to a mobile chat app for building "coin and NFT holder communities" and a mobile wallet app to manage your land and routers. Neither of these links work yet.

DYOR

There's a lot more to explore and read on the overline network page, including documentation and links to socials. If after poking around you think this project might be worth risking literally nothing, I'd appreciate if you used my link to claim your free ōLand.
