BMW is using the Blockchain for the transparency of its logistics chain: find out how

Bmw announcement comes on 31/03/2020 with an official press release.

The BMW Group uses cutting-edge technologies to improve its processes. One of them is the Blockchain which allows tamper-proof data sharing. A technology that opens up to possible applications throughout the automotive value chain.

The BMW Group is therefore using this technology in purchasing with the aim of ensuring the traceability of components and raw materials in international supply chains in several stages. As you know, the supply chains of the car world are particularly complex and involve many actors. Precisely for this reason an important effort is necessary to clearly trace the origin or the supply path of a component.

Until now, partners have had a habit of managing data separately. Since the IT systems of the companies were not always able to communicate with each other, it was always very difficult for the BMW Group and its suppliers to guarantee maximum transparency. For this reason, the German brand has launched the "PartChain" project in order to guarantee the traceability of the components with extreme simplicity, simply with a click on the computer.

This solution uses cloud and blockchain technologies. This new system therefore allows to keep track of the origin of the components among all the participating partners without any risk of manipulation. A first pilot test was conducted in 2019. This year, the platform will be distributed to around ten suppliers. Andreas Wendt, member of the BMW board of directors, commented on this project as follows:

PartChain allows the collection and transmission of tamper-proof and constantly verifiable data in our supply chain. This action is designed to take the digitization of purchases in the BMW Group to the next level. Our vision is to create an open platform that will allow the safe and anonymized exchange and sharing of data within the supply chain in the sector.

However, BMW is not the only automotive group to focus on this technology. Mercedes has also started a project that includes the Blockchain.
