Have you ever taken one quick glance at YouTube analytics and immediate been intimidated? If so, don't worry about it, everyone has felt that way at some point. This post will be the perfect way for you to learn and turn YouTube analytics from a hated enemy to a close ally to your channel's growth.
The first step in learning about YouTube analytics is learning how to access them. There are two ways you can view the stats: you can download the YT Studio mobile app and sign in to your channel there, or you can visit YouTube Studio on a desktop browser and click the 'Analytics' button on the left side of the page. YouTube Studio can be accessed by first visiting youtube.com then clicking on your profile picture. When you do that one of the options that appears will say YouTube Studio. Now that you know the two ways to access YouTube Studio analytics, lets get into the explanation of what the different stats mean and how you can use them to grow your channel.
Views
This one is fairly self-explanatory. It is simply the number of times YouTube users have watched your video during the selected time period. The stat is typically delayed by one to two days. Views are an important stat to know; however, they are not necessarily the most useful when it comes to figuring out how to get more subscribers. If your channel is not getting many views, you should look at three other stats, namely Impressions, Impressions CTR, and Average View Duration. I will cover those three stats in the next three sections. Improve them and your views will subsequently also improve.
Impressions
An impression is any time someone sees your video recommended to them on YouTube, whether it is on the home page, subscriptions feed, search page, in a playlist, or anywhere else in the app or on the website. They do not need to watch your video for it to count as an impression, they only need it to be recommended. You always want to get as many impressions as possible. To do this be sure to use keywords in every one of your videos. As long as you use keywords properly, you will get more impressions, which can lead to more views and more subscribers.
Impressions Click Through Rate
Impressions Click Through Rate, or CTR, is a measure of how frequently people click on your videos when they are recommended. A low CTR means that not very many people watch your videos when they see it recommended to them. Conversely, a high CTR means most people click on your videos whenever you get an impression. A good CTR is in the range of 5% to 10%, though for smaller channels it can be much higher. To boost your CTR, make sure to have an interesting, relevant, and eye-catching thumbnail for every video and a title that is appealing and accurate. Doing both of these will make your videos appear more interesting and will make viewers more likely to click on your videos rather than the ones surrounding them.
Average View Duration
The Average View Duration of your videos is the length of time the average viewers spends watching your videos. Higher Average View Durations are always better. YouTube is much more likely to recommend views with a longer Average View Duration. To get a longer Average View Duration, make sure that your videos are interesting, contain the content that the title and thumbnail advertise, and get to the point. If you are making a video on how to build a bicycle but spend the first 10 minutes discussing the history of bikes then viewers are likely to click away from your video and find another one that will more quickly show them what they want to see or know. Remember that people have a short attention span and don't want to waste their time on anything except exactly what they want to see.
