10 Tips On Growing a YouTube Channel

By FCCincyFan | YouTube Channel Tips | 29 Jul 2021

Hey there! Are you looking for helpful advice on how to get more views and subscribers and grow your YouTube channel? If so, then is the post for you. In it I will detail 10 different pieces of advice I have for newer YouTubers.

1. Have a memorable name and a unique, consistent brand

One key to growing a YouTube channel is building trust with your viewers and subsequently getting them to watch more. To ensure that you can have that trust and consistency, give your channel a name that is memorable and related to the content you will be producing. Your channel's logo and banner should also use the same colors and fonts so that your channel pages look more professional. Another key part of great branding is to make sure all of your thumbnails are related to each other in some way. You can put your logo on all of them, use the same color or art scheme, have a unique, recognizable font on every one, or do something along those lines. Every person who sees one of your thumbnails and has see a few of your videos before should know that the video is by you before they even see your name because they recognize the branding. As time goes on, assuming you make good, enjoyable videos, your thumbnails will quickly be associated with that quality content and will be clicked on more often, thus increasing your views.

2. Upload frequently on a routine schedule

It has been well established that the YouTube algorithm rewards consistency. Because of that, you should upload videos on a routine schedule. When uploading a video, YouTube gives the option to schedule them instead of being released immediately, so you should take advantage of that fact and have videos come out on the same day (or days) of the week every week at the same time. In addition to fulfilling one of the wishes of the YouTube algorithm, this will also help your channel because your consistent viewers will know when to expect a new video and check it out then. Also, the more frequently you can publish videos the better, but always value quality over quantity. If you can only make a great video every two weeks, then only release one every two weeks; however, the more quality videos you can release on a consistent schedule the better.

3. Use calls to action in every video

Anyone who has spent any time watching videos on YouTube knows how creators seem to remind viewers to like, share, and subscribe every single video. There is great reason for that! A call to action is any time a YouTuber reminds their audience to do something that benefits that channel. Research shows that using calls to action greatly increases a channels performance. Because of that, make sure to remind your viewers to like, share, subscribe, comment, and follow you on social media (more on that later). Calls to action are best done within or close to your channel's average view duration so that as many people as possible hear them. So if, on average, your views last for one minutes and thirty seconds, have a call to action within the first minute and thirty seconds. Your average view duration can be found in YouTube Studio analytics. One thing to keep in mind when performing calls to action is to not overdo it. If you spend too much time telling people what to do instead of what the video is about they will quit watching you. I would personally recommend never spending more than 15 seconds on a call to action.

4. All your videos must have keywords

I cannot overstate the importance of this point. Each and every single video that you publish must have a keyword related to it. This will guarantee that it will get more views. Keywords are just words or phrases that people are looking for content related to. The easiest way to select a keyword is to go to YouTube and then type something related to your channel into the search bar. YouTube will give auto-complete suggestions as to what you should search for, and those suggestions can be used as keywords, because they are clearly what people are looking for. The end goal of keywords is to make sure that you make content viewers are looking for. Once you have decided on a keyword for a video, use it in the title, the tags, around three times in the description, and say it out loud during the video in a natural way. Using keywords for your videos is the single best way to boost your views on YouTube, especially if your channel has a small returning audience. Make sure you use them!

5. Share and engage on social media

This point is fairly straightforward. Create social media profiles for your channel and then post when you upload a video. This will give you more reach, thereby giving you more views. I would also recommend posting exclusive content or information on your social media so that there will be more incentive to follow you there. You can also get more traffic by linking your channel in your social media profile and your social media in your channel about page.

6. Respond to comments

The comment section on your videos can be a great tool. Be sure to use it to your advantage. When viewers ask you questions, answer them to the best of your ability. Responding to people's comments makes them think more highly of your channel because you took the time to read what they said and think out a reply. Be sure to engage your audience through the comments section.

7. Make interesting content

This may seem obvious, but you absolutely need to make your content interesting. If what you produce is bland, boring, generic, or similar to what other channels make there will be less reason to watch yours. Make your content enjoyable or useful so that viewers will want to keep coming back. One point to note when it comes to interesting content is that there is very little (if anything at all) that will appeal to everyone using YouTube. Because of that, when you are brainstorming ideas, consider what you think your audience will want to watch, not what every single YouTube user will want to watch. As your channel grows you can adjust what your target audience is and therefore what content will appeal to them.

8. Write solid descriptions

Descriptions may not seen overly important (after all viewers are there to watch a video, not to read something) but video descriptions can be used to help get you more views. As was mentioned earlier, include a video's keyword in its description about three times. To avoid making the description too "keyword dense" be sure to include at least 150 total words in the description. The first thing a good description should do is tell a little about the video, then below that include links to your social media accounts and website if you have one. In the section telling about the video make sure not to spoil the content or viewers are likely to leave your video after reading what will happen.

9. Take advantage of shorts

YouTube recently rolled out the new "Shorts" feature, which is a section of the mobile app that includes vertical videos with durations of less than a minute. Because they are new, YouTube wants to grow the popularity of the feature, and therefore likes it when you make shorts. Take advantage of this; they are relatively simple to make and can seriously accelerate your channel's growth. From my personal experience shorts tend to go on runs where there get a lot of views in a short period of time, then cool down after that.

10. Plan ahead

My final word of advice to anyone trying to grow a YouTube channel from scratch is to plan ahead. Have an idea of what content you are going to make well before you make or release it. Then create it some time before it is actually due to go out and use YouTube's handy scheduling feature to ensure it goes out at the right time. By being ahead of schedule you can be more flexible and if something goes wrong filming a video you have time to correct any mistakes. My recommendation is that you have every video created at least a week before it is due to be released. This buffer time can (and at some point will) prove to be very useful.
