In the past 24 hours Cardano Blockchain was attacked, split, and successfully defended.
Yesterday a malformed transaction created by long time developer Homer J triggered a rare partition in Cardano Blockchain. This split the chain into a ‘healthy’ chain and a ‘poisoned’ chain, and shifted around 60% of block production onto the poisoned chain.
Homer J admitted to targeting a pool run by Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson out of frustration. They said it started as a test to recreate a testnet issue, but it escalated carelessly to the main network.
Engineers from Input Output Global, Cardano Foundation, Emurgo, stake pool operators worldwide, and exchanges like Kraken and Binance released hotfixes and upgraded nodes, resolving the split after about 16 hours. No user funds were lost.
Charles Hoskinson called the attack ‘personal’ and informed the FBI of the events.
