By AhmadAlZohbi | YouCrypto | 30 Jan 2024

What is bitcoin halving?

Bitcoin halving is the reduction of mining rewards to half.

When will it occur?

It's scheduled to happen once every 210,000 blocks (every four years) and will continue to happen untill the the total bitcoins generated reaches 21 million (maximum)

The next bitcoin halving is expected to happen this year in April 2024.

How does it happen?

When the halving occurs, the reward for mining a block cuts in half, it's currently 6.25 BTC per block, but after the halving it will be 3.125, so less reward with the same environment with the result of bitcoin price going higher.

History of bitcoin halving :

  • January 2009 (Rewards 50 BTC).
  • November 2012 (Rewards 25 BTC).
  • July 2016 (Rewards 12.5 BTC).
  • May 2020 (Rewards 6.25 BTC).
  • April 2024 (Rewards 3.125 BTC) [Expected].

So technically speaking, it might be a good investment to own some bitcoins now before the halving occurs.
