The origin of the meme

What for many is just a typing error, in the community of cryptocurrency's the word hodler has all historical meaning and today it is completing 7 years.

The hodler is that bitcoin buyer that doesn't sell the cryptocurrency's, regardless of the market mood, the hodler believes in the future of bitcoin. The hodler has faith that that cryptocurrency's, be it bitcoin or any other altcoin, will recover its value even with the market down.

The expression "hodler" was born from the BitcoinTalk forum post, in which the user "GameKyuubi" complained about life and his weak skills as a trader.

The bitcoin had just fallen from $876 to $455 in 1 day, for not having skills with trade he decided to "hodler" the bitcoins. He even realized that he misspelled the word, but he was so drunk he didn't care.

GameKyuubi explains that in down markets there are 3 kinds of people, the good traders that make money, the lettuce hands that lose, and in the middle are the hodlers. These are the patients who will only see results when the market rises again.

"Traders can only keep your money if you sell", concludes the user.
