I was excited to read the above news. Now the decentralized domain extension from Unstoppable Domains can be accessed by normal mainstream browsers.
A few years back when these domains were launched, we could access them only by installing a browser extension. I too had installed that Unstoppable Domain browser extension just to see how it works. But over the years, I changed my computer, switched my browsers, even formatted hard disks; I never bothered to install that browser extension again.
I found that domain extension quite unusable for general usage. Add to it the gas fee we had to incur for every edit or so. Although I was willing to buy a decentralized domain name, I never got excited enough to buy any Unstoppable Domain name.
But today, these domains have become very accessible. We just need to make a minor change in browser settings and we are all set for decentralized web. You can find the detailed guide to change your browser settings here. It takes only a few seconds to do that.
So all of those who had shared your Unstoppable Domain names with me are welcome to drop those again. I'd love to bookmark them now :)
But isn't Cloudflare a centralized organization?
We shall get dependent on Cloudflare's DNS servers to access these .crypto domains with http. Cloudflare can always censor and restrict access to any domain if they want to do so. In fact, Cloudflare had censored some domains in the past too though there could be some valid reasons for it. But the thing is that it CAN censor anyone.
When censoring 8chan, Clouflare wrote:
we are terminating 8chan as a customer effective at midnight tonight Pacific Time. The rationale is simple: they have proven themselves to be lawless and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths. Even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they have created an environment that revels in violating its spirit.
When censoring access to Daily Stormer, Clouflare wrote:
Our terms of service reserve the right for us to terminate users of our network at our sole discretion. The tipping point for us making this decision was that the team behind Daily Stormer made the claim that we were secretly supporters of their ideology.
Well, whatever be Cloudflare's stance, but integrating Unstoppable Domains does make them very accessible now. And in case of any censorship, one can always access those domains the way you did earlier. Isn't it?
