Tom Lee says the crypto bull market has been running since late June, and Bitcoin is still sitting about 30% below where it was a year ago. Both things can be true, but only one of them is on the chart.
I've watched enough cycle calls to know the pattern. The narrative gets loud before the price confirms, and traders who buy the headline usually get filled at the top of the range.
What Lee Is Actually Selling
At Korea Blockchain Week, Lee, who chairs Bitmine, said a new cycle is underway and could be the biggest yet. His case rests on tokenization, money rotating out of AI stocks, generational wealth transfer, and digital asset treasury companies that don't face redemptions.
He also stuck with his $150K Bitcoin target. His $60K Ether number is a long-dated call, and I wouldn't build a trade around it this quarter.
The point I'd underline: Lee runs Bitmine, which holds roughly 5.99 million ETH, close to 5% of supply, and keeps buying every week. That's a real bid in the market. It's also a big holder talking up the asset he owns. I take the flows seriously and the rhetoric with a pinch of salt.
What the Chart Says
Bitcoin closed September 29 around $83,640. It topped out near 87,250-87,330 on September 21-23 and has been chopping under that ever since.
September is up about 7%, the best September on record. That's nice, but a bounce inside a range isn't a trend change. Year-over-year, BTC is still red.
Ether is the weaker tape. It closed around $2,677 and got slapped back at $2,742 intraday. Spot ETH ETFs also ended a seven-day inflow streak with a small outflow on September 29, while Bitcoin funds kept buying. Small numbers, but it tells you where the marginal buyer is leaning.
One thing I like: analysts noted leverage has been flushed out near the $84K area, where Bitcoin's big long-term holder cost-basis cluster sits. That's cleaner than a crowded long. Still, pull up funding rates and open interest on your own terminal before you size anything, because I'm not going to quote numbers I haven't checked.
Bitcoin: Where I'd Act
Support is the 82,580-82,940 block, made up of the September 24 and 28 lows. Overhead, the 84,490-85,210 shelf has capped every push this week.
If Bitcoin closes a daily candle above $85,210 and holds it on a retest, I'd want the 87,250-87,330 highs next. That would be the first real evidence for Lee's thesis. If it closes back under $84,490 after the breakout, the reclaim failed and I'm out.
If it loses $82,580 on a daily close, the range floor is gone and 80,150-80,910 becomes the magnet. Watch for a sweep of those lows followed by a fast reclaim. That's usually a trap for late shorts, and I'd flip long on it.
For a range trade, buying $83,000 with a stop at $82,400 risks about $600 to target $85,210. That's roughly 3.7 to 1, and it stretches past 7 to 1 if the $87,250 highs come into play.
Ether: Smaller Room for Error
ETH needs a daily close above $2,743 to matter. Then 2,787-2,804 is the next stop. Fail at $2,652 on the way down and the setup is dead.
Support sits at 2,635-2,652. A daily close under $2,635 exposes the September 20 low near $2,568. I'd rather trade Ether off a confirmed break than guess the direction inside this pocket.
Where I'd Be Wrong
I'm not calling Lee wrong. Institutions have been underweight for a long time, and a Q4 rotation is plausible. I'm saying the market hasn't paid him yet.
Macro is still noisy too. Oil and geopolitical headlines have been moving risk appetite day to day, and one bad headline can wick straight through a clean level.
My bias: neutral-to-bullish while Bitcoin holds $82,580, aggressive only on a daily close above $85,210, and flat or looking for the $80K pocket if $82,580 breaks.
