tl;dr: Putting human readable layers on top of Ethereum.
Eventually, it will come to all of crypto, just like email addresses evolved from [email protected] to what they are today.
However, for now, I’m seeing it happen in Ethereum, not surprising that it’s one of the first.
A few years ago, the Ethereum Name Service came into existence, so you could buy Name.eth which we did for Crypto Explorers and a few others.
Instead of typing in a long Ether address, you could just type in Jer.Eth and the payment would automatically resolve to the properly owned address.
That was a big start.
Now, it’s possible to add a crypto payment layer to the existing domain name system.
So, for example (and I haven’t done this yet, mostly because of the number of steps involved), you’ll be able to send Eth to Jer979.com or NeverStopMarketing.com and have that eth (or ERC-20 token) get deposited into the correct account.
That’s a hell of a lot of easier than before and it’s great for reducing the friction to mainstream adoption.
Combine that with the privacy layers, like zk.money built on the Aztec protocol which brings a whole new layer of privacy to Ethereum and we should start to see more adoption.
Each layer of payment simplicity (or feature like privacy) brings with it a new set of customers and use cases.
