The US military says it has attacked three oil tankers connected to iran after missiles were reportedly fired at the two American warships operating in this region. According to the US central command, two of the tankers were disabled - one near Iran's Kharg Island and another close to Strait of Hormuz. A third tanker, located in the gulf of Oman, was reportedly completely destroyed. The US said the Iranian Revolutionary Guard had launched several attacks aimed at a American aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer, but the US ships managed to avoid the attacks. No American personnel were reported injured.
Iranian state media confirmed that one of its oil tankers had been hit near kharg island. However, Iranian authorities had not publicly confirmed the reported attacks against the US warships at the time of the report. US Central Command chief admiral brad cooper described the strikes as a warning to Iran. He said the US would respond with an even greater economic cost if American forces were attacked.
The US military claims the three tankers were connected to a large network involved in moving oil and generating money for Iran's Revolutionary Guard and groups allied with it in the region. These latest strikes comes after fighting between the US and Iran intensified again, following a short period when tensions between the two sides had been relatively quieter. The wider conflict began when the US and Israel launched major attacks on Iran on 28th February. Iran then retaliated by targeting Israel, US military positions and American allies in the Gulf.
One of the biggest concerns has been the Strait Of Homuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments. Disruption to shipping through the strait has contributed to higher energy prices around the world.
The conflict is also creating political pressure on Donald Trump, particularly because American are feeling the impact of rising energy costs, with US midterm elections approcahing in November, the cost of the war could become an important political issue.
