United Kingdom to Cut Foreign Aid to Yemen

Over a hundred charities in the United Kingdom including Oxfam and Save the Children have condemned the government's reported decision to cut foreign aid to Yemen from 164,000,000 Pounds (227,000,000 United States dollars) in 2019-2020 to 87,000,000 Pounds (120,000,000 USD). According to leaked reports of discussions held in the last month among UK Foreign Office officials, Yemen is only among several Middle Eastern, southeaster European, and African nations whose aid is at risk. OpenDemocracy says that the leaked documents suggest that UK officials are considering cutting aid to the Democratic Republic of Congo by 60%, Lebanon by 88%, Libya by 63%, Nigeria by 58%, Somalia by 60%, South Sudan by 59%, Syria by 67%, and the west Balkans by 50%. UK funding to the Sahel is listed in the documents as dropping to 23,000,000 Pounds (32,000,000) from 340,000,000 Pounds (470,000,00 USD).

In all, the document suggests that the UK government wants to reduce its international age budget by about 4,000,000,000 Pounds (Over 5,500,000,000 USD) in 2021-2022, meaning that it will drop to spending about 0.5% of national income on foreign aid, short of the United Nations target of 0.7%. While critics say that the decision means that the UK is "abandoning moral obligations" and turning its back on nations combating the effects of war, famine, disease, and natural disasters, a Foreign Office spokesperson said that the government remains "steadfast" in its support to the Yemeni people. UK ministers also announced that the reported contributions by the nation is "a floor", not a ceiling.
