Two firefighters are confirmed dead after an explosion happened while they were attempting to control and extinguish a fire at the Baghjan oil well run by Oil India Limited in the Assam state of India. A spokesperson said that the two firefighters were found drowned near a pond close to the site of the fire after jumping into the water to escape the explosion. According to local media reports, up to 1,600 families have been evacuated from the surrounding areas while six people have been injured.

The explosion and fire comes 13 days after the well began leaking gas, though the cause of the explosion is still unclear. The total economic damage is still unclear. Local reports also say that there are fears that the explosion and fire has also damaged the environment.
