Malawi President Mutharika announced that he along with all government ministers will be taking a 10% wage cut for 3 months to raise funds to combat the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic. President Mutharika earns the equivalent of $3,600 United States dollars a month. 

The nation's president also launched a stimulus package to reduce economic damage from the disease that includes tax-breaks for businesses, a reduction in fuel prices, and the recruitment of 2,000 extra health workers.

Currently, the nation has only confirmed 4 cases of the infection, all related to people travelling from the United Kingdom. Though there is no nationwide lockdown yet, Malawi has declared a state of emergency, closing schools and higher education institutions, banning gatherings of over 100 people, encouraging citizens to work from home, and promoting hand-washing and social-distancing guidelines. However, to maintain foreign currency earnings and to keep more farmers in business, all tobacco markets would remain open for now.
