Winning 58.57% of the vote, Malawi's electoral commission announced that opposition leader Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera defeated incumbent President Arthur Peter Mutharika and won the nation's rerun presidential vote. Mr. Chakwera said that his victory is a victory for "democracy and justice", and added "My heart is bubbling with joy!".

The 2019 election originally saw a narrow victory for Mr. Mutharika by under 159,000 votes. However in February of 2020, Malawi's Constitutional Court annulled Mr. Mutharika's May 2019 election victory, citing vote tampering and the use of correction fluid to alter the vote tallies.
